Why A Keto Diet May Help Psychiatric Disorders
The ketogenic diet, which shifts the body’s fuel source from glucose to fat-derived ketones, is being studied to see if it might benefit people living with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Mental illness was once seen as a disorder of the brain alone, but it is becoming clearer that the body’s metabolism—including insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, lipid imbalances, and impaired energy production—is a major factor.
When you cut back on carbs, your body switches to burning fat instead, producing ketones. Ketone bodies can help stabilize brain activity and reduce overexcitability.
This difference is subtle in a healthy system, but it may become more relevant when glucose metabolism is impaired or the brain is under metabolic stress. (More)
