We are excited to also revive her Mount Vernon Record, which listed the names of those patriotic citizens who cared enough about saving Washington’s home to give their hard- earned money to the cause.

When you give $40 or more today (equivalent to about $1 in the 1850s), you will be listed on our digital version of the Mount Vernon Record—showcasing the dedicated patriots who are continuing the work started over 160 years ago.

The federal and local governments declined to support this noble cause to save our first president’s first home, so Mrs. Cunningham knew she had to rely on the people to preserve it. But she wasn’t interested in relying on wealthy millionaires with a blank check who wanted to control everything.

She knew that Mount Vernon would only be able to remain open for generations if the American people cared enough about it. She put her faith in them, and they made her proud.

Just as you show up to support Mount Vernon with your gifts, Americans from all walks of life supported the effort to save Washington’s home.

From the smallest schoolchild to the most battle-worn veteran; Americans donated to show their respect for Washington. They wanted to thank him in any way they could.

Even a group of New York City newsboys pulled their pennies together to try and save the estate! They respected Washington’s legacy too much to see his home fall to ruin.
