How we fight for press freedom at New Times

Hi Peter,
It keeps getting harder to discern what information is accurate and reliable. That’s why we at New Times are here to be a dependable source where you get your news.
Today is World Press Freedom Day. Newsrooms around the world are taking this opportunity to warn people that misinformation and other manipulations threaten families, communities, and our country as a whole.
Phoenix New Times works hard every day to detoxify the information environment in Arizona. For more than 50 years, we’ve exercised the highest standards for local reporting, as our trophy case of journalism awards attests. Today we also have guardrails in place to keep generative AI images and prose out of our publication. We continue to pay local staffers and local freelancers to gather stories that show you the Valley truthfully and with humanity.
A free press starts with reporters who pay attention to their city. When our staff writer Clarissa Sosin spent a day with a team that offers medical care to homeless people in Phoenix’s streets, she captured a story that AI simply cannot. Likewise, when our staff writer Sara Crocker invested weeks getting to know the determined chef collective Más Amable for our latest cover story, she brought you a story only a human reporter could gather.
We develop this intimacy with the Valley to bring you closer to your neighbors. We want you and hundreds of thousands of other readers to better understand one another, so that we can live in a richer, more connected community.
For us to continue being a free press — a voice for all Phoenicians — we need readers’ help. As an independent newsroom, we depend on financial contributions from our readers like you to keep us fighting the good fight in preserving democracy. So will you help us out this Press Freedom Day?I’m here to join the fight!
We know it’s World Press Freedom Day. But we are grateful for you, our readers, for helping us exercise that freedom on your behalf so close to home.
Best Regards,

Sam Eifling
Editor-in-Chief
