What if a person truly denies himself, works hard and wisely, and actually becomes wealthy? This question touches on our attitudes toward people who have accumulated wealth, whether in or out of the church, and it may severely test our judgment of them.
God blessed both Abram and Isaac. Obviously, He is not against wealth, as if it were some kind of evil burden imposed upon sinners. Wealth, however, brings trials just as surely as it brings blessings. We must not forget that Jesus warns that it is more difficult for a rich person to enter the Kingdom of God than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle (Matthew 19:24). Wealth presents temptations, and they are not always easily handled.
One major difficulty is that wealth tends to pave the way for a person to destroy himself spiritually through the destruction of his faith in God. This happens because the wealthy person has the tendency to place his trust in his wealth rather than in God (Matthew 19:20-22). A second major problem is that wealth tends to promote pride because of a person’s excessive self-admiration over being astute enough to accumulate it. Scripture reminds us, though, that God responds to the humble (Isaiah 66:2). Thus, the Bible’s overall warning is that, in the unwary, wealth can subtly create division between its owner and God through misplaced trust.
Hebrews 11:36-38 presents us with another view of the picture regarding God and wealth:
Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented—of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.
By comparing this record with God’s enriching of Abraham and Isaac, we learn that God deals with those He calls according to His purpose, that is, according to what He desires to accomplish through or in them. The Jews of Christ’s time generally believed that, if someone was prosperous, it was evidence that he was a good person and God was blessing him. However, that may or may not be true. The record of Scripture shows that many evil people become wealthy, and Solomon makes note of this in Ecclesiastes.
The other side of the coin is that some people believe that, if a person is virtually destitute, he must be hiding a sin. We must learn to be careful in our judgment because neither blessing nor curse provides always-true evidence of the person’s spiritual condition. To ensure our standing before God, we must diligently pursue His righteousness by carrying out our Christian responsibilities in the hope that God in His mercy might see fit to bless us with spiritual wealth.

There is one big leaguer on a particularly fun quest this season. A quest only completed by 10 players in baseball’s Modern Era … and also by Will Ferrell and Bugs Bunny.
Pirates utilityman Tyler Callihan wants to play all nine positions.
Right now, it’s six down, three to go. And Callihan has already gotten one of the hardest ones out of the way!
The 26-year-old has pitched for the Buccos twice this season in blowout losses. So even though he’s a position player, “pitcher” is crossed off the list. So are first base, second base, third base, left field and right field.
That means, over Pittsburgh’s final 61 games, Callihan just has to play catcher, shortstop and center field. Of those three, catcher is the big one — it’s definitely the hardest to just jump in and play. But Callihan’s in a decent spot there. He’s the Pirates’ emergency catcher already, and he even used to catch Rangers flamethrower Jack Leiter while they were playing for the USA 18U National Team.
Sixty-one games is plenty of time to check off those last three spots on the diamond. Heck, five MLB players have managed to play all nine positions in a single game — Andrew Romine for the Tigers on Sept. 30, 2017, Shane Halter also for the Tigers on Oct. 1, 2000, Scott Sheldon for the Rangers on Sept. 6, 2000, Cesar Tovar for the Twins on Sept. 22, 1968, and Bert Campaneris for the A’s on Sept. 8, 1965.
Five more guys have done all nine within a season — Jake Elmore in 2013, Jose Oquendo in 1988, Jack Rothrock in 1928, Gene Paulette in 1918 and Jimmy Walsh in 1911.
And in total, 23 players since 1900 have completed the trick in their Major League career … including Callihan’s own manager, Don Kelly.

There were plenty of fireworks in the first game of this 2025 NLDS rematch, a 10-7 Phillies win. We’re set up for another great matchup tonight, as Dodgers All-Star Justin Wrobleski faces off against the Phillies’ second ace, Zack Wheeler — who was not an All-Star but is a Cy Young contender. Even though Wheeler’s season didn’t start until late April, he’s been at his very best ever since he returned to the mound.
Orioles at Red Sox (7:10 p.m. ET, MLB.TV)
The Red Sox have now won 14 games in a row. If they get No. 15 tonight, they’ll tie their longest winning streak in franchise history, a mark that was set in 1946. While Ranger Suarez’s return, originally scheduled for this game, will have to wait, special things are happening in Boston. The Sox hold the third AL Wild Card spot at 51-48.
Reds at Mariners (9:40 p.m. ET, MLB.TV)

AUSL PLAYOFF BRACKET IS SET
It’s time for the 2026 Athletes Unlimited Softball League postseason. Here’s who’s playing, and how to watch.
The Utah Talons, who finished with the league’s best record at 16-9, have already earned a spot in the best-of-three AUSL championship series.
They’ll face either the Chicago Bandits or the Portland Cascade, who are playing a winner-take-all play-in game on Thursday at 9 p.m. ETon ESPN.
The AUSL championship series starts Saturday at 1 p.m. ET on ABC.

NCA in partnership with Carry The Load and Just Serve is organizing the National Day of Service to commemorate the 25th anniversary of 9/11 on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10:00 am (local time). The event includes a brief ceremony and instructions to volunteers on headstone cleaning and beautification. This is a great service opportunity for employee engagement, youth groups, and individuals. Participants are encouraged to post on a Veteran’s memorial page at VA’s Veterans Legacy Memorial.

Good morning, I’m Dan Gartland. I can’t believe MLS and Fox didn’t schedule a game as a nightcap after the World Cup final. They didn’t want to capitalize on the massive TV audience to show off the top domestic soccer league?
In today’s SI:AM:
That was a letdown

Surely there were millions of fans who tuned in for yesterday’s World Cup final who thought, “Oh yeah, this is why I only watch this sport every four years.”
The 2026 World Cup will be remembered as perhaps the most interesting edition in the tournament’s rich history, and hopefully soccer-curious American fans’ enduring memories of the summer will be all the great games we saw, rather than the stinker that closed it out. Picking the best storyline of the tournament or the most memorable game is an impossible task. Cabo Verde’s underdog run and epic round of 32 match against Argentina would be a good choice. Argentina also had incredible comebacks against Egypt and England en route to the final. England had its own stunning comeback in the round of 32 against DR Congo, then played an instant classic against co-host Mexico at the iconic Estadio Azteca and later won a bonkers third-place game against France. Norway had its best World Cup performance ever as Erling Haaland announced himself to the North American audience as one of the best players in the world. The list goes on and on.

4. Nolan Arenado’s game-tying home run for the Diamondbacks after they trailed the Cardinals, 7–0. Arizona went on to win in 10 innings on a walk-off double by Max Kepler.
3. William Contreras’s epic bat flip after a walk-off, two-run homer. (I like how he looked up to make sure it wasn’t going to smack him in the head on the way down.)
2. Ryan Fox’s clutch birdie putt on the final hole to win the British Open. Fox, 39, had never finished higher than 16th at a major.
