Like the founders of our nation, the founders of Hillsdale College understood the essential connection between faith and freedom. The College was founded in 1844 to offer “sound learning” in order to preserve “the inestimable blessings…of civil and religious liberty.”

Yet today’s ruling class mocks people of faith as “backward,” “bigots,” and even “Christo-fascists.” Politicians like Barack Obama claim that people like you “get bitter” and “cling to guns or religion.”

These so-called elites are full of contempt for you and for Christianity and will not protect your civil and religious liberties.

You and I know that religious liberty in America is under serious threat. But we can reverse course.

The first step is…EDUCATION.

Today’s government policies that threaten religious liberty were conceived and implemented by people deceived by far-Left propaganda in our K-12 schools, colleges, and universities.

That’s why a vital part of this fight—in which Hillsdale College is a leader—is reaching and teaching millions of citizens the TRUTH about America’s great heritage of religious liberty.

We are heavily invested in our educational outreach efforts through our Project to Save Religious Liberty in America.

These efforts include:

- Teaching nearly 1,600 undergraduate and graduate students—on our campuses in Hillsdale, Michigan, and Washington, D.C.—who bring their traditional faith with them as they join the fight to restore liberty and constitutional government in our country.

- Distributing Imprimis, America’s leading digest of liberty, which is mailed to more than 6.6 million homes and businesses ten times per year. Previous issues include “Inside the Transgender Empire” by Christopher F. Rufo, “The Most Important Decision in Life” by Bishop Robert Barron, and “The Politicization of the Department of Justice” by Harmeet K. Dhillon.

- Producing and promoting free online courses for any citizen who wishes to learn on topics such as Christianity, the Constitution, American history, and free market economics. Several courses (including “The Genesis Story: Reading Biblical Narratives,” “Ancient Christianity,” and “C.S. Lewis on Christianity”) consider the important connection between faith and liberty.

Providing a classical K-12 curriculum with a solid grounding in American history, constitutional government, and economics to schools that educate thousands of students nationwide.

After everything we’ve seen in recent years, the need for Hillsdale’s educational outreach efforts is undeniable.

On May 13th:

1846 U.S. Congress Declares War on Mexico

On May 13, 1846, the U.S. Congress officially declared war on Mexico, initiating the U.S.-Mexican War. This conflict stemmed from the annexation of Texas and the disputes over its border, as well as American desires to acquire lands in what are now California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. The war significantly altered the map of North America, leading to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, which ceded large territories to the United States and had profound long-term implications for both nations, particularly in shaping regional and cultural identities.

1958 Vice President Nixon Attacked in Venezuela

Vice President Richard Nixon faced a violent mob attack while on a goodwill tour in Caracas, Venezuela, on May 13, 1958. The attack was a stark demonstration of anti-American sentiment in Latin America during a period of heightened Cold War tensions and U.S. interventions in Latin American politics. The incident prompted a reassessment of American foreign policies in the region and highlighted the risks and challenges of international diplomacy in volatile environments.

1981 Pope John Paul II Shot

Pope John Paul II was shot and critically wounded by Mehmet Ali Ağca, a Turkish gunman, in St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican on May 13, 1981. The assassination attempt shocked the world and deeply affected the Catholic community. Pope John Paul II’s remarkable recovery and his subsequent forgiveness of his assailant were widely admired and reinforced his messages of peace and reconciliation. The motivations behind the attack remain the subject of much speculation and conspiracy theories, but it undeniably shaped the Pope’s legacy and influenced his focus on peace initiatives.

Sec. Blinken Criticizes Israel

Secretary of State Antony Blinken voiced strong criticism of Israel’s handling of the war in Gaza Sunday, saying Israel’s actions may have violated international humanitarian law.

Blinken acknowledged a State Department report that indicated Israel violated international law, but he also refused to indicate how the U.S. would respond.

While Blinken declined to reveal if the Biden administration had a “red line” with Israel, he indicated the White House has deep concern about future military operations in Rafah.

The Secretary’s statements seem to contradict earlier statementsmade by President Biden when he said the U.S. would withhold aid should Israel advance on Rafah.

Police and Grads Flee California

Hundreds of California law enforcement officials have grown tiredof the state’s “soft-on-crime” policies and relocated to Texas, according to one media outlet.

Police officers now living in Texas said California passed several anti-law enforcement policies that made policing impossible. In Texas, those same officers said they found a renewed purpose.

College educated individuals are also leaving the Golden State. A recent study revealed that California saw a 23% decrease in those residents in 2023. Many citing housing, living costs, and job prospects as their reasons for leaving.

Like Texas, Nevada has seen an increase in former Californians. According to a Rasmussen survey, 51% of Nevada residents want the government to make it more difficult to move there.

Solar Storms Light Up Skies

Brilliant purple, green, yellow, and pink hues were seen in the night skies worldwide last weekend as severe solar storms enhanced the Northern Lights further south than normal. See photos of the event here.

Powerful geomagnetic storms first arrived on Friday with a historic G5 rating, the highest level on a geomagnetic storm ranking scale. The resulting colorful skies were witnessed by people in the U.S., Canada, Europe, and China. See more photos here.
