Bye, Southwest Bags Fly Free

On March 11, Southwest announced the end of the beloved Bags Fly Free policy for most fare categories.

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1954: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Brown v. Board of Education that state laws segregating schools were unconstitutional. In the court’s opinion, Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that the doctrine of “separate but equal” set forth by the 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson had no place in public education. “Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” he wrote.
•	In 1983: The U.S. Department of Energy announced significant amounts of mercury had accidentally been discharged over a number of years from a plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during work supporting the development of the hydrogen bomb.
•	In 1987: Mistaken for an Iranian tanker by an Iraqi fighter pilot during the Iran-Iraq War, the frigate USS Stark was hit by two missiles that killed 37 sailors.
•	In 1995: Shawn Nelson stole an M-60 tank from a National Guard armory in San Diego, driving it through the neighborhood, over cars and fire hydrants, until he was eventually shot and killed by police.
•	In 2004: Tanya McCloskey and Marcia Kadish became the first legally married same-sex couple in the United States during a morning ceremony in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
•	In 2006: The USS Oriskany aircraft carrier was sunk off the coast of Florida to create an artificial reef and popular dive site, nicknamed the Great Carrier Reef.
