On this day in 1954: The U.S. Supreme Court ruled unanimously in Brown v. Board of Education that state laws segregating schools were unconstitutional. In the court’s opinion, Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote that the doctrine of “separate but equal” set forth by the 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson had no place in public education. “Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal,” he wrote. |

In 1983: The U.S. Department of Energy announced significant amounts of mercury had accidentally been discharged over a number of years from a plant in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, during work supporting the development of the hydrogen bomb. |

In 1987: Mistaken for an Iranian tanker by an Iraqi fighter pilot during the Iran-Iraq War, the frigate USS Stark was hit by two missiles that killed 37 sailors. |

In 1995: Shawn Nelson stole an M-60 tank from a National Guard armory in San Diego, driving it through the neighborhood, over cars and fire hydrants, until he was eventually shot and killed by police. |
