Wildfire caused when motor home set ablaze closes I-17

A motor home containing explosive ammunition caught fire near Cordes Lake, starting a wildfire and closing northbound lanes of Interstate 17.

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 1775: The Continental Congress appointed Gen. George Washington as the commander in chief of the Continental Army.
In 1836: Arkansas was admitted as the 25th state. The land was part of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase from France.
In 1864: U.S. Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton officially declared the former Arlington House estate belonging to Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee to become a national cemetery about a month after the first military burial there in Virginia. Arlington originally sat on 200 acres and grew to more than triple that size.
In 1944: After heavy naval gunfire and aircraft bombing, U.S. Marines stormed the beaches of the Japanese-held island of Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands. It was the first heavily defended land mass in the Central Pacific to be assaulted by U.S. amphibious forces. America’s victory in Saipan was key to its strategy for striking Japan with B-29 bombers.
In 1989: Sub Pop Records released Nirvana’s debut album, “Bleach,” which the band had recorded at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle for about $600.
In 1996: Iconic American jazz singer Ella Fitzgerald died at 79.
