The Food and Drug Administration is phasing out popular synthetic food dyes such as Red No. 40 and Yellow No. 5 by 2026—citing concerns that they cause hyperactivity and long-term health issues  in children. Some states, including California, have passed or proposed laws to restrict certain synthetic food dyes in school meals and other products.
