Twenty years ago, the metro Phoenix suburb of Mesa didn’t have an Asian District. Then, the transformation of an abandoned Target changed everything.

Luxury homes sold in Arizona

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1965: Over 22,000 U.S. troops invaded the Dominican Republic to “forestall establishment of a Communist dictatorship” and protect American interests. President Lyndon B. Johnson and the U.S. government had feared that the Dominican Republic’s Civil War happening at the time would result in the country becoming “another Cuba” and sent troops to quell such notions.
•	In 1967: Boxer Muhammad Ali cited religious beliefs in his refusal to be drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was immediately stripped of his heavyweight title and later convicted of draft evasion, banned from boxing for three years, sentenced to five years in prison and fined $10,000. Ali avoided prison while he appealed the sentence, which the U.S. Supreme Court overturned in 1971.
•	In 1973: “The Dark Side of the Moon,” by Pink Floyd, reached No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 album chart, eventually becoming one of the best-selling albums of all time.
•	In 1996: Australia’s worst mass shooting happened in the Port Arthur area of Tasmania. Martin Bryant killed 35 people and wounded 23 others. Bryant was captured the next day and was sentenced to 35 consecutive life sentences without parole. The massacre led to stricter gun control laws in the country.
•	In 2021: Rudy Giuliani’s New York home and office was raided by federal agents. The former New York mayor and lawyer to President Donald Trump had his computers and cellphones seized.
•	In 2021: The Justice Department charged Ahmaud Arbery’s murderers, Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan, with federal hate crimes. The three men had pursued Arbery with their trucks and guns while he was jogging in the Satilla Shores neighborhood near Brunswick, Georgia, on Feb. 23, 2020. After overtaking Arbery, Travis McMichael fatally shot him.
