On this day in 1917: The United States bought Saint Thomas, Saint John and Saint Croix (all part of the Virgin Islands) from Denmark for $25 million in gold coins. |

In 1945: Soviet forces liberated Warsaw, the Polish capital, from German occupation. At the same time, the “Death Head” unit of the German SS began evacuating nearly 60,000 prisoners from the Auschwitz concentration camp and forced them into a death march toward inner Germany. |

In 1950: In what was called “The Crime of the Century,” Anthony “Fats” Pino and 10 other men stole more than $2.7 million from a Brink’s Armored Car depot in Boston, Massachusetts. It was the largest robbery in the history of the U.S. at the time and went unsolved for six years until one of the gang members, Joseph O’Keefe, violated the “honor among thieves.” |

In 1961: In a televised farewell address to the nation, U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower delivered a speech in which he warned about the increasing power of the “military-industrial complex” and about the dangers of massive federal spending. |

In 1994: A 6.7-magnitude earthquake shook the greater Los Angeles area. Called the Northridge earthquake, it killed 57 people, displaced and injured thousands more, and did billions of dollars worth of damage. |

In 1997: Ireland granted the first divorce in its history to a terminally ill man. |
