On this day in 1945: With immigration quota limits already in place based on country of origin, President Harry Truman ordered that World War II refugees, or displaced persons, receive preference for entry. Jewish people comprised about two-thirds of the nearly 23,000 refugees who came to the U.S. under the Truman Directive. |

1989: Genocidal Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was ousted from power in a revolution that led to the Christmas Day trial and execution by firing squad of him and his wife, Elena. Their deaths ended more than four decades of Communist Party rule. |

1989: Six weeks after the fall of the Berlin Wall, thousands of people flocked to the ceremonial reopening of Brandenburg Gate, the former border checkpoint that divided East and West Germany for nearly three decades as a symbol of the Cold War. |

2010: Allowing gay and lesbian people to serve openly in the military, President Barack Obama signed a bill that repealed what was called the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy enacted 17 years earlier by President Bill Clinton, who directed the U.S. Department of Defense to not ask military applicants about their sexual orientation. Clinton’s policy was a change from the previous prohibition that led to thousands of LGBTQ+ people being discharged from the armed services. |

2017: President Donald Trump signed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which eliminated the penalty for not having health insurance imposed by the Affordable Care Act and overhauled the tax code for Americans filing returns through the Internal Revenue Service. This included cutting the corporate tax rate and increasing standard deductions for individuals and couples, many of whom previously would have itemized instead of taking the standard deduction. It also changed tax credits, depreciations, expensing and other tax items that affect businesses. |

2017: Responding to North Korea’s latest nuclear and missile activity, the U.N. Security Council added new sanctions, including trade restrictions, such as on the importing of fuel, as well as limiting where its citizens could work elsewhere in the world. |
