On this day in 1901: Annie Edson Taylor, a 63-year-old schoolteacher from Bay City, Michigan, became the first person to survive a barrel ride over Niagara Falls. She designed and built her own barrel, which had cushions and a leather harness, and was screwed shut and pumped full of oxygen. |

In 1929: The U.S. stock market experienced a significant crash, setting off several days of “panic selling” that led to a drastic fall in stock prices and marked the beginning of the Great Depression. The day is often referred to as “Black Thursday.” |

In 1945: The United Nations was officially established after the U.N. Charter was ratified by the five permanent members of the Security Council – the United States, United Kingdom, France, Soviet Union and China – and the majority of the other signatories. |
