On this day in 1943: President Franklin Roosevelt joined British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the USSR’s leader, Joseph Stalin, at the Tehran Conference in Iran to develop strategies for winning World War II.

In 1961: Ernie Davis of Syracuse University was announced as winner of the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first African American player to win the top award in college football. He was later selected No. 1 in the NFL draft but never played an NFL game, as he was diagnosed with leukemia and died in March 1963.

In 1964: NASA’s Mariner 4 launched on its mission to Mars from Cape Kennedy, Florida, collecting data during a flyby of the third planet in July 1965.

In 1999: Eleven people were injured by a nude swordsman at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church in London during a Sunday Mass. Having said he thought the victims were demons, Eden Strang was found not guilty due to his mental health and was instead detained for nearly two years at a psychiatric hospital.
