Good morning, Arizona. Here’s what our reporters are working on and what you should know about what’s happening across the state before you start your day.
Wanda Dench, aka “Thanksgiving Grandma,” and her young friend, Jamal Hinton, have simple words of advice for Americans this year: Spend the holiday with family.
The Arizona residents have shared Thanksgiving together every year since a November 2016 text meant for Dench’s grandson was instead received by a then 17-year-old Hinton.

These Arizona grocery stores are open on Thanksgiving

To prepare for Thanksgiving dinner, it’s almost inevitable an ingredient will be forgotten, like whipped cream for the pies, or worse, used up, like butter. For Thanksgiving Day grocery store runs, The Arizona Republic put together a list of which grocery stores will be open.

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.
On this day in 1943: President Franklin Roosevelt joined British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and the USSR’s leader, Joseph Stalin, at the Tehran Conference in Iran to develop strategies for winning World War II.
In 1961: Ernie Davis of Syracuse University was announced as winner of the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first African American player to win the top award in college football. He was later selected No. 1 in the NFL draft but never played an NFL game, as he was diagnosed with leukemia and died in March 1963.
In 1964: NASA’s Mariner 4 launched on its mission to Mars from Cape Kennedy, Florida, collecting data during a flyby of the third planet in July 1965.
In 1979: An Air New Zealand sightseeing flight crashed into Mount Erebus on Antarctica, killing all 257 people on board.
In 1994: Serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer was beaten to death in prison by a fellow inmate.
In 1999: Eleven people were injured by a nude swordsman at St. Andrew’s Roman Catholic Church in London during a Sunday Mass. Having said he thought the victims were demons, Eden Strang was found not guilty due to his mental health and was instead detained for nearly two years at a psychiatric hospital.
