Last Week This Morning: Abortion ban repealed!
Good morning, Rj!
Abortion ban repeal: what you need to know. On Thursday, Governor Katie Hobbs signed a repeal of the 1864 ban that criminalizes abortion in nearly all circumstances after 2 Republican Senators joined with Democrats to pass the bill on Wednesday. Abortions are currently legal in Arizona through up to 15 weeks of pregnancy. However, due to the Arizona Supreme Court’s ruling that the 1864 law may be enforced, Arizonans will still face a period where abortions will be outlawed, as the repeal of the ban will not go into effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session. Meanwhile, abortion advocates continue to fight to prevent the 1864 law from being enforced and to put the right to access abortion on the ballot.
Putting the ACA in DACA. The Biden Administration announced that DACA recipients will soon be able to enroll in affordable health care coverage through the Affordable Care Act starting on November 1st! This is a massive win for millions of immigrant families who have been excluded from vital and lifesaving health care coverage, and it would not have been possible without immigrant youth and allies who have been fighting for years. As we celebrate this win, we must remember that right-wing politicians continue to attack the DACA program and immigrants generally. We need the Biden Administration to deliver comprehensive protections for all immigrants.
Standing with students. Over the last several weeks, many college campuses across the country have responded to student protestors with horrifying violence, retaliation, and surveillance. At Arizona State University, police forcibly removed the hijabs of Muslim women arrested at a pro-Palestine rally in a shameful violation of their constitutional rights. We stand with student protestors and condemn efforts to limit their rights to free speech. Consider signing this letter if you’re an alum frustrated with ASU’s response.
No words, just bad vibes. Have you ever wondered what it’s like listening to some of the wild things said in the Arizona Legislature? Check out our partner, Rural Arizona Action, and their latest Tiktok.
Pledge to vote no on Justices Clint Bolick and Kathryn King. Support our campaign to unseat the judges who ruled to end abortion access in Arizona.
Protect our ability to hold judges and justices accountable. Arizona Republicans are trying to protect the Justices who ruled to end abortion access in Arizona by stripping us of our power to unseat judges. Tell your Representatives to vote NO on SCR 1044.
