Biden’s first 100 days. Pres. Biden delivered his first address to a joint session of Congress, highlighting what his administration has accomplished in the last 100 days, andoutlining his plans to “build America back better”. Progressives had a significant impact on Biden’s priorities thus far, but are calling for more specific plans, acknowledging that this is only the beginning. Rep. Jamaal Bowman delivered a response on behalf of the Working Families Party, saying “We need to think bigger…. to solve the crises of job, climate, and care…. to address the burning crisis of structural racism in our country.”
Ducey signs anti-abortion bill. Gov. Ducey signed a sweeping anti-abortion bill into law. Senate Bill 1457 criminalizes the doctor-patient relationship, and equates the rights of fetuses and embryos with full personhood, limiting the bodily autonomy of the person actually carrying the fetus in the first place, among other horrible provisions. Advocacy groups are looking into litigation against SB 1457, which is a clear attempt by Republicans to overturn Roe v. Wade.
May Day. The 1886 Haymarket Massacre followed the original May Day general strike by workers demanding an eight hour work day—police responded violently, and eight labor leaders were executed by the state. This event was the precursor to International Workers Day. Across the world, workers and allies held demonstrations yesterday to commemorate May Day, promoting the power of unions and worker solidarity. In the U.S., many of these events focused on immigrant workers’ rights and more job protections amid the COVID pandemic.
