The yo-yo is one of the oldest toys in recorded history — ancient Greek vases from around 500 BCE depict children playing with disk-shaped toys on strings. The modern name comes from the Philippines, where the word “yo-yo” means “come back” in Tagalog. American toy manufacturer Donald Duncan popularized it in the United States in the 1920s.
