The world’s first traffic light was installed in London in 1868 — decades before the automobile existed. It was designed to manage horse-drawn carriage traffic near the Houses of Parliament and used gas-lit signals. It exploded a month later, injuring the police officer operating it, and the idea wasn’t revisited until 1912.
