The term limerence was first coined by psychologist Dorothy Tennov in the 1970s. It is used to describe the intense, involuntary infatuation or obsession that can be experienced in the early stages of a romantic relationship. Limerence is characterized by a strong desire for reciprocation of one’s feelings, and can be accompanied by intense emotions such as euphoria, despair, and anxiety. Although it is not recognized as a clinical disorder, limerence is a commonly experienced phenomenon, and has been the subject of much research and discussion in the field of psychology.
