Where We Stand Now

Peter,
Now that we’re passed the deadline for bills to be heard in committee in their chamber of origin, what is the status of our priority bills?
Wonder no longer. Find out below!
Automatic Enrollment
Our automatic enrollment bill, HB 2423, was debated in caucus and on the floor in Committee of the Whole last week. It then received a final vote last Thursday morning (at 4:10 AM!). It passed out of the House by a vote of 44-9.

9th Grade On-Track
We always envisioned additional funding for 9th Grade On-Track as a budget play—not as a standalone bill. We are starting to ramp up our efforts to secure an additional $3.4 million in funding for these programs in the next budget.

Affordable Childcare
With Representative Liguori’s HB 2648 essentially dead, our attention turns to trying to secure funding for childcare subsidies in Arizona’s FY2027 budget.

Tobacco Tax
Representative Volk’s HB 4032 is dead. Despite that, we continue to believe it is imperative to eliminate the tobacco tax loophole and we will continue to work next session to secure the passage of closing the tobacco tax loophole.

Child Tax Credit
Representative Kupper’s HB 2004 is also dead. We will continue to work to make sure that Arizona’s families are supported in future legislative sessions.

Fees
Our fees bill, HB 2265, passed out of the House of Representatives by a vote of 55-2 with 3 members not voting on Monday, February 23rd. It has now been transmitted to the Senate. Yesterday, it passed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee with unanimous support!

Juvenile Life Without Parole
With Senator Farnsworth’s SB 1548 dead, we are looking to see if there are alternative pathways—such as a striker—to eliminate sentencing kids to life in prison. If we are unable to secure a striker, we will continue to work on eliminating juvenile life without parole sentences next session.

Sentencing Reform
Our main sentencing reform bill was not introduced this session. But we remain committed to implementing sentencing reform to make sure that 18–25-year-olds who need treatment or rehab can get it.
