Nearly half of the votes in the last presidential election were cast by mail1 and voters who plan to use this option later this year need to have confidence that their vote will be counted. But with Trump-appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy still the head of the U.S. Postal Service, implementing a plan that is slowing down mail delivery, it’s up to us to protect vote by mail from DeJoy’s attacks.
As soon as DeJoy took over at the USPS, he slowed down the mail.2Today, the mail is slower than it was in 2020.3
The U.S. Senate recently held hearings about how these slowdowns could impact our elections―in particular DeJoy’s strategy of consolidating mail sorting, resulting in many states including the toss-up state of Nevada, shipping their mail out of state to be sorted.
As Senators Jacky Rosen and Catherine Cortez Masto of Nevada stated,“sending over one hundred thousand mail-in-ballots from Nevada to California before they are sent back to Northern Nevada is extremely concerning to election officials in the state.”4
Additionally, Senator Bernie Sanders led a letter with 20 of his Senate colleagues expressing “significant concerns about the timely delivery” of mail under DeJoy’s leadership including prescription medication, local mail, and mail-in ballots.5
