This Day In HistoryJune 27, 1950President Harry S. Truman ordered U.S. forces into South Korea after North Korean troops invaded across the 38th parallel. Acting under the banner of the United Nations, the U.S. aimed to halt the spread of communism in East Asia—a key objective in the Cold War. The Korean War became a bloody and prolonged conflict, ending in a stalemate in 1953. Although the fighting stopped, the Korean Peninsula remains divided to this day. Truman’s decision set a precedent for future U.S. interventions under the doctrine of containing communism. |
