Support Phoenix New Times this #GivingTuesday!
| Hi Peter, Recently I caught up with an old friend, a journalist who, unlike me, stayed in South Florida after a stint reporting at the New Times paper there. She later met a guy, moved to the mountains of North Carolina — and was squarely in the path of Hurricane Helene when it freakishly slammed into Appalachia. She has spent the past 14 months learning the finer points of home repair, to fix the damage that a falling tree inflicted on her new house. Even if your house is standing straight, and you’re feeling healthy, and you have a job, I suspect this version of 2025 resonates with you, as it does with me. Just when you think you’re out of the path of the storms, they find you. This year has forced us all to watch powerful people make a mockery of laws and institutions and regular folks’ lives. But it has also forced us regular folks to decide what we believe in, and invited us to fight for it. As gnarly as the year has been, there are signs of hope everywhere. This October saw the largest single-day protest in modern American history, part of a string of direct actions against a lawless presidency. People around Phoenix have worked to protect their neighbors from ICE abductions. Even the barbaric killing of Charlie Kirk offered a chance to stand up for free speech. Power-hungry scolds dragged people simply for pointing out that Kirk’s rhetoric on gun violence and race were not, by any means, above reproach. Plenty of people saw through that move, and Kirk’s, and said no, we’re entitled to call a spade a spade. I told my friend with the smashed-in house that in 2025 I’m grateful to lead a news organization that treats every single day as a chance to make a difference. To me, Phoenix New Times is the storm shelter. It’s a daily dose of FEMA relief. It’s how I and my newsroom make ourselves useful as Americans, as Arizonans. Being useful keeps us sane during moments — or entire years — of chaos. Today is #GivingTuesday. It’s an annual global movement that encourages people to give back to their communities and support causes they care about. It’s a crucial fundraising day for newsrooms such as ours, and it’s one that in the past has spurred our readers to reflect on the value we bring them, and to give. I’d like to suggest, too, that it’s a chance for every one of our readers to be useful, and to claim a little share of that feeling that our editors and reporters get each day when we go to work. By supporting New Times financially, you help to keep our original, aggressive reporting free for everyone in the Valley. Donors help us protect, inform, entertain and strengthen our community. To meet our year-end campaign goal of $30,000, we need to raise $10,000 by midnight tonight. If everyone reading this email chipped in even a few dollars, we’d get there easily. Thank you for your past contribution to New Times! Your generosity fuels the work of our staff and keeps us in the fight. Would you consider becoming a monthly contributor so we can plan ahead for every moment 2026 will bring? Help us continue giving back to our community. This Giving News Day, can we count on you?Yes, I’ll set up a monthly contribution!I’d rather make a one-time gift.We know there are countless worthy causes out there, and we’re so thankful for your consideration and support.
