Our city was hit hard by yesterday’s storm, and we know many of you are still feeling its impact. From downed trees and power outages to flooded streets and damaged homes, this has been a challenging time for our community. Some of our residents had trees fall on their homes and cars, a frightening and stressful experience that no one should have to face.
Please know that Tempe crews have been working around the clock –clearing debris, restoring services, and assessing damage across our neighborhoods. In a typical day, our emergency teams respond to about 80 calls. Yesterday, that number more than doubled with over 170 emergency calls.
There were nine apartment buildings and several other homes that were so damaged that people cannot currently live in them. The American Red Cross served more than 200 meals in the areas that were hit the hardest. If you are in need of temporary emergency shelter, Escalante Multigenerational Center is available for you. We are also looking for long-term housing solutions for these families.
Many Tempe businesses are also in need. An industrial park with 64 businesses sustained significant damages.
We are coordinating closely with APS, SRP, regional emergency responders and community partners to make sure help reaches those who need it most. We thank the State of Arizona, Maricopa County Department of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross for providing significant help during this storm.
The scope and severity of the damage have required additional assistance at the county and state level. Based on the severity of the challenges caused by Monday’s microburst, Mayor Corey Woods is declaring a state of emergency. This enables the City of Tempe to take all necessary steps to protect public health, safety and welfare. Among other benefits, this declaration allows the city to expedite cleanup, repairs and public safety measures.
But more important than any operation is this; we care about you. Tempe has always shown its strength through compassion and connection. If you or your neighbor needs assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We have resources ready to help. Visit tempe.gov/TempeStorm for a helpful list.
Very soon, you will be receiving information regarding additional recovery efforts and ways you can get support or lend a hand. Thank you for your patience, kindness, and the spirit of community that makes Tempe so special. Together, we’ll recover and rebuild stronger than ever.
