The first of our priority bills has been introduced! HB 2265, sponsored by Representative Neal Carter, is the first of our series of bills to strengthen Arizona’s criminal justice system. 

The bill will eliminate fines and fees that are charged to access some rights protected in the Constitution that help make sure trials are fair and accurate.  

Currently, Arizona charges a fee for a public defender (Amendment 6), for a trial by jury (Amendment 6), and to appeal a ruling (Amendment 14). Some of these fees are charged even before a case goes to trial, meaning you could be found innocent and still wind up being charged a fee.
