John Marshall (1755–1835) became the fourth Chief Justice of the United States, serving from 1801 to 1835. A veteran of the Revolutionary War, he helped cement the authority of the Supreme Court and ensured the Constitution remained the supreme law of the land. His landmark ruling in Marbury v. Madison established judicial review, empowering the Court to strike down unconstitutional laws.

Devoted to strengthening the young republic, Marshall believed that a strong, unified government was essential to liberty. He once wrote, “The government of the Union… is emphatically and truly, a government of the people.” His decisions shaped the balance of power among the branches and preserved the federal system that defines the nation today.
