Let’s take a look at the Arizona Watchdog Project

Hi Peter,
You already know the reporters and editors at Phoenix New Times chase news and vital information for you week in, week out. I’m confident that no newsroom our size covers more of Maricopa County’s news, food, culture, music, and events. Day in, day out, you can count on us to find the most intriguing parts of living in our corner of the country.
But don’t let the quick-turn news hits or the features about new restaurants or music festivals lull you: We’re also patiently grinding out some of the most intensive investigative reporting in the Valley.
Over the past year, we’ve produced a series of investigative stories under a banner we called the Arizona Watchdog Project. This grant-funded effort has allowed us to support the work of two dogged reporters — Stephen Lemons and Beau Hodai — who spend weeks, even years, sussing out stories from documents and well-placed human sources.
They have reported patient, adversarial stories such as Beau’s latest, “Insurrectionist Brunch: Trumpists plotted to deploy military on U.S. soil,” a deeply measured account of a 2024 gathering in which right-wing officials and advisors discussed ways to use the American military to control American cities. “This is just astonishingly great reporting,” the author Radley Balko, an expert on policing and security, wrote when he posted the story on Bluesky. And that’s just one of the dozens of similar stories we’ve brought to our audience, all free of charge to read.
Even if you’re not binge-reading our investigations as you browse for best bars or things to do this weekend, that’s fine! We’ll still be out here with efforts like the Arizona Watchdog Project, looking out for your city and your democracy. And we’re able to do so thanks to donations that members like you have sent to support our accountability reporting.
To tackle ambitious projects at such a high level, we need your help. Our independent newsroom relies on our readers to support this depth of work.
Will you contribute to us today?
Look for more from the Arizona Watchdog Project in the coming days — we’ve got some more bangers on the way. And thank you for equipping our newsroom with the resources to hold powerful people to account. We’re out here working for you in all we do.

Cheers,
Sam Eifling
