When I was growing up, smart, strong, and unconventional women were discouraged. When I ran for office, the South Carolina legislature was dominated by a Good Old Boys Club and my opponent thought that women didn’t belong in politics. People thought I was too brown…too female…too young…too conservative…too principled… Well, I said: Too bad! I was inspired by great women who broke barriers and defied expectations, women like Margaret Thatcher and Jeane Kirkpatrick. I want to share the stories of these incredible women with you and hope you will be inspired, too. That’s why I wrote this book!
