Today is Gun Violence Awareness Day – a time to honor victims, support survivors, and advocate for safer communities.

Arizona ranks 8th in the nation for weakest gun laws and has the 17th-highest rate of gun violence deaths in the US.

And what has the Republican-led Legislature done in the face of this crisis? They’ve passed bill after bill to weaken gun laws and shield the gun industry.

This year alone, Republicans have tried to:

• • Force colleges to allow guns on campus (SB 1020)

• • Incentivize schools to arm teachers (HB 2022)

• • Roll back regulations on silencers (SB 1014)

• Punish local officials for trying to reduce gun violence in their communities (SB 1705)

Thankfully, Governor Katie Hobbs has stepped in – vetoing these extreme bills and standing up for public safety. But we shouldn’t have to rely on her veto to stop reckless policies.

Arizona families deserve a legislature that will fight for them, not for the gun lobby.

That’s why the ADLCC is working to flip the legislature and elect Democrats who will pass common-sense gun safety laws, like universal background checks and safe storage requirements.
