Gosar: Only Citizens Should Vote—It’s That Simple
Washington, DC — Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-09) issued the following statement after voting yes on S. 1383, the SAVE America Act, legislation requiring a government-issued photo ID to cast a ballot and proof of citizenship to register to vote:
“Voting is a right of American citizenship—not a benefit handed out to anyone who crosses the border. I voted for the SAVE America Act because our elections must be secure, lawful, and reserved for U.S. citizens.
Requiring proof of citizenship to register and a photo ID to vote is common sense. If you need valid identification to buy a six-pack of beer or some Marlboro Lights, board an airplane, shop at Costco, or join a gym, you should absolutely need it to vote. The idea that voting should have fewer safeguards than everyday transactions is absurd.
Not surprisingly, Democrats opposed this bill because election integrity gets in the way of their political strategy. Loose election rules and weak voter verification create ambiguity—and ambiguity benefits those who want to manipulate the system, steal elections and cling to power.
Nearly 20 million illegal aliens flooded into our country under the previous administration, making election security more urgent than ever. Congress cannot ignore the risks created by mass illegal immigration and sloppy voter rolls.
The SAVE America Act restores trust in our elections and protects the voice of lawful American voters. Only citizens should decide American elections, and I will keep fighting to make sure that principle is enforced,” stated Congressman Paul Gosar.
Background:
Thirty-six states require voters to show some form of ID to cast a ballot. Despite finding noncitizens and similarly ineligible registrants on voter rolls, fourteen states still refuse to require photo ID for voting.
The SAVE America Act will:
- Require any voter to show a photo ID when they cast a ballot. Absentee and mail-in voters can attach a copy of their ID to their mail-in ballot.
- Amend the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA), which has governed State voter registration since 1993, to require States to obtain documentary proof of U.S. citizenship – in person – when registering an individual to vote in a federal election.
- Require states to check for noncitizens and other ineligible registrants on their voter rolls at least once a month.
- Directs states to create a procedure for addressing discrepancies in documentation so that no eligible voter is disqualified due to a name change.
- Allow eligible voters to register and provide documentary proof of citizenship by mail, provided their State allows early voting or same-day voter registration.
- Allow eligible voters to cast a provisional ballot if they forget to bring the necessary paperwork on Election Day.
