Fwd: House Education Committee: Reduce the Achievement Gap!

Peter,
I wanted to make sure you saw Georgina’s email about the House Education Committee hearing tomorrow on a very important bill!
House Education Committee: Reduce the Achievement Gap
HB 2423 will make it easier for qualified middle school students to take advanced math classes. This may seem like a small change, but it’s something that can make a huge impact.

Subject: House Education Committee: Reduce the Achievement Gap
Peter,
Yesterday, we shared data with you about students who successfully complete a higher-level math course being more likely to go to college, especially low-income, Latino, and male students.
Tuesday, the House Education Committee will hear HB 2423, the bill to create an automatic enrollment process for middle school students to take algebra in by the time they reach 8th grade. Currently, between 24% and 34% of students from low-socioeconomic or Latino backgrounds in Arizona take Algebra I or higher in the eighth grade, compared to 57% from higher-income backgrounds.
House Education Committee: Reduce the Achievement Gap
Taking advanced classes is an easy way to improve college attainment. HB 2423 hopes to do that by automatically enrolling students in algebra by the time they reach 8th grade as long as they meet objective criteria.
But, the members of the committee need to hear RIGHT NOW that you support this policy. Please take action now to ask your legislators to support automatic enrollment in algebra and reduce the achievement gap!
Standing with you,
Georgina Monsalvo, Campaigns and Government Affairs Director
