The remarkable journey of Jeff Torborg from his formative days at Rutgers University to unforgettable moments as a major league catcher—including Sandy Koufax’s perfect game and no-hitters from Bill Singer and Nolan Ryan—and his transition to coaching and managing with the Indians, Yankees, White Sox, Mets, Expos and Marlins. Far from a storybook Hall-of-Fame tale, Torborg’s career was marked by struggles at the plate and challenges in the dugout. Yet, his enduring desire to lift those around him, coupled with his ability to see the best in everybody, became his true legacy. The documentary is, at its core, a lesson in leadership, dignity, and purposeful living—a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of balancing ambition with compassion. The narrative is enriched by Jeff Torborg himself as well as a chorus of voices – Joe Moeller, Ron Guidry, Ozzie Guillen, Nolan Ryan, Buddy Bell, John Rooney, Claire Smith, Dan Evans, Gary Thorne, Kenny Albert, members of Torborg’s family and many others—all sharing stories that illuminate the man behind the uniform. They are stories about the all-time greats like Sandy Koufax, Nolan Ryan, Don Drysdale, Frank Robinson, Willie Mays, Goose Gossage, Billy Martin, Frank Thomas and many others. But also stories of those who Torborg mentored and helped make the absolute most of their talent –guys like Matt Merullo and Jeff Schaefer.
I am incredibly excited to announce that a new documentary film chronicling the life and career of my father, Jeff Torborg, is out now!!
Jeff Torborg: A Wonderful Baseball Life is directed by filmmaker, Matt Flesch, who previously directed the documentary film Last Comiskey. On behalf of the Torborg family, we thank Matt profoundly for his amazing work, which tells the story of my father’s baseball journey with heart and eloquence, through my father’s own words as well as those of Ron Guidry, Nolan Ryan, Don Drysdale, Ozzie Guillen, Buddy Bell, Kevin Millar, Ryan Dempster, Claire Smith, Gary Thorne, Joe Moeller, Dave “Snake” Sabo and many more. Matt’s film captures the extraordinary class, kindness, and humility my father displayed throughout his 40+ years in Major League Baseball as a player, coach, manager, and broadcaster, as well as his 15-year battle with Parkinson’s Disease, which he faced without complaint and with an amazing sense of humor. In short, we believe that Matt “hit it out of the park” with this film, which highlights both the impressive highs and crushing lows of my father’s baseball career and life journey. Indeed, our family is sincerely honored that Matt chose my father as the subject of his latest film, which we will forever cherish as an incredible tribute to a true gentleman and an incredible husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
We sincerely hope that you all enjoy this film!
