Everyone counted us out
7 years ago today, Alexandria made history.
She had left her bartending job to challenge a 20 year incumbent Democrat for Congress — in line to become Speaker of the House — who was now outspending her 10-to-1.
Attack ads called her ‘extreme’ because she believed that everyday people could come together and defeat powerful special interests, win real action on the climate crisis, and build a democracy that works for all of us.
Everyone counted her out. But on June 26, 2018, Alexandria won the primary, putting her on the path to become the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
7 years later, Alexandria is still fighting for what she believes is common sense:
– That in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, a person shouldn’t go bankrupt when they get sick.
– That a minimum wage should cover the minimum cost to live.
– That our elected officials should take on abuses of corporate greed everywhere they find it.
And together, we’ve built a movement fighting for real progressive change, from Medicare for All to democratizing fundraising power in politics.
