![]() Happy New Year! Here’s to a year filled with great golf, memorable rounds, and good times with friends.Speed Matters If you want to get more enjoyment from your golf in 2026, there are a few important questions worth asking yourself. One of the biggest is this: can you add speed to your golf swing? It is much easier to shoot lower scores when your tee shots travel 20 yards farther and you are hitting a 7 iron into the green instead of a 6 or 5 iron. That extra distance changes how the course feels and how confident you stand over every shot. A great example of what is possible is the work JC has done with Larry “Doc” Piekarsky. When Larry first came in for lessons, his initial goal was to increase club speed. However, he was recovering from a serious injury that had caused him to lose more than 50 percent of the muscle mass on his right side. Rather than chasing speed directly, the focus shifted to rebuilding strength and stability in his swing. JC put Larry on a targeted workout plan designed to rebuild lost muscle and support the swing changes they were making. Over time, that approach paid off. Larry is now swinging faster, making much stronger contact, and has added 25 yards of carry distance over two years. That progress came even with a break after the first year due to another injury. It is a great reminder that speed gains are possible at any stage, even when the path looks different than expected. Everyone can add speed. Five mph of extra clubhead speed with the driver adds 10 mph of ball speed and usually at least 20 yards of distance. There are so many ways to add speed. Here are just some of them: • Flexibility: Can you improve your upper body rotation? How well do you separate your upper body from your lower body? Can your shoulders rotate around the spine? • Power: How much extra clubhead speed would you create with stronger abdominals and obliques? Would stronger forearms allow a faster release? • Technique: What is your kinematic sequence on the downswing? What ground reaction forces are you creating? How wide is your hand path? • Equipment: Does your club shaft flex and length fit your swing? As simple as it sounds, does your grip size and quality allow your hands to work properly? How much could you add?Now you can see the potential for improvement. You can surely imagine one or two extra mph added with each improvement you incorporate. Is 20 extra yards so much? Could it be more? What number could you add? I’d like to start a conversation about speed See you on the course!Your Encanterra Golf Team |
