D-backs select Tommy Troy with 12th pick in MLB Draft
The D-backs picked Stanford shortstop Tommy Troy with their first pick of the 2023 Draft, No. 12 overall — their eighth time in nine Drafts selecting a hitter with their top pick.
Troy, MLB Pipeline’s No. 17 Draft prospect, helped lead the Cardinal to the 2023 Men’s College World Series. The 5-foot-10, 197-pound infielder posted a .394/.478/.699 batting line in 2023 with 17 home runs and 58 RBIs.
Tommy Troy Scouting Report
School: Stanford (CA) Year: 4YR JR Birthdate: 01/17/02 Position: SS Bats/Throws: R/R Height: 5′ 10″ Weight: 197lbs
All five of Troy’s tools received average or above-average grades from MLB Pipeline, although the right-handed hitter’s ability to make strong contact at the plate stands out. With excellent pitch recognition, a low strikeout rate and a good deal of power, Troy profiles as a strong hitter. He’s also an above-average runner. Troy moved to third base for Stanford this season and could wind up at second base or potentially in center field.
