The desert lacks thick foliage because it receives only around 7 inches of rain per year (in the Phoenix metro area). Still, we do have our share of mosquitos, but nowhere near the number found in, say, Florida. Nor will you find a ton of snails or centipedes or beetles. But before you think about swapping insect populations, we have two that are both common and venomous: black widow spiders and scorpions. Rarely are bites or stings fatal, but they can be exceedingly painful. Some people will hunt for scorpions with a black light, as the arthropods glow under such illumination (pictured). Beware, and don't go reaching into a woodpile looking for the perfect log. Scorpions love woodpiles. And dark, rarely used sheds. And tree
bark. Beware. Beware!
