The field trip, organized by the Phoenix Raceway and the Larry Fitzgerald Foundation, allowed the students to test drive the victory lane, design their own race cars, and use high-tech simulators and videos. The event was aimed at teaching the students about STEM education and its impact on various industries, including motorsports. The partnership between the raceway and the foundation was intended to inspire and motivate the students, many of whom come from military families at the nearby Luke Air Force Base.

The fallout from the protest led to the departure of the ASU Police Chief, who was placed on paid administrative leave while school officials reviewed complaints about his behavior during the demonstration.
