Arizona 411: What’s in the Budget?
Capitol Watch is our weekly legislative update video series, watch the latest episode here!
Budget conversations at the AZ Legislature. As the Legislative session is slowly winding down, all eyes are focused on the budget for next year. Both party caucuses have proposed budgets at this point, and negotiations are underway. The budget is the very last thing the Legislative body will focus on, but is still a very difficult process.
As of now, Republicans have created a budget deal that would implement a flat 2.5% income tax that cuts $1.5 billion a year from the state revenue. It would also ensure that the highest-earning taxpayers will be capped at a 4.5% tax surcharge, preventing them from indirectly adding to education funding.
The tax cuts proposed in this legislation are some of the largest Arizona has ever seen. These cuts could have a widely negative impact for schools and teachers across the state. As discussions are still underway, it is crucial to ensure schools and teachers have heavier consideration in this next fiscal year’s budget.
Senator Marsh’s SB1486 signed into law! SB1486 is a bill that excludes fentanyl testing products from the list of illegal drug paraphernalia, which will allow Arizonans to further address drug addiction properly in the state.
This bill legalizes fentanyl test strips which allows a person to detect the presence of lethal fentanyl in narcotics. This will help provide necessary preventative measures in avoiding lethal overdose.
Join us at our End the Filibuster Rally! We need Sen. Kyrsten Sinema and Sen. Mark Kelly to listen to Arizonans — eliminate the filibuster so that we can pass all of the popular legislation constituents want! There will be *three* rallies in Tucson, Flagstaff and Phoenix to send our Senators a BIG message that Arizonans demand an end to the filibusters. No excuses! The rallies in Phoenix and Flagstaff will be held Thursday, May 20th from 5:30-7:00pm and the rally in Tucson will be held at 4:00pm!
