Gosar Votes to Extend Compensation to Downwinders, Urges Reforms to Include Impacted Areas Currently Excluded

Washington, D.C. —Congressman Paul Gosar, D.D.S. (R-AZ), issued the following statement after voting in support of S. 4119, legislation to extend the authorization of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Trust Fund for two additional years.

“While I am pleased to have voted to extend the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) two additional years to provide benefit payments to persons who developed cancer or other related illnesses after being exposed to radiation from atomic weapons testing during our nation’s Cold War Era, I remain concerned that the original act failed to properly define the boundaries of impacted populations.

Unfortunately, Americans that reside in counties in close proximity to where the testing occurred are excluded from this program for no logical scientific reason, including people that reside in Mohave County, Arizona and Clark County, Nevada.

Since first being elected to Congress, I have worked tirelessly to fix the error that excluded Downwinders from Mohave and Clark Counties from filing claims with the Department of Justice. A two-year extension is certainly helpful, but Congress has a moral responsibility to update RECA and should stop dragging its feet and immediately take up H.R 538, the Downwinders Parity Act of 2021, important bipartisan legislation I authored that would extend RECA coverage to all of Mohave and Clark Counties,” concluded Congressman Gosar.

Background:

The United States government conducted nearly 200 atmospheric weapons development tests as part of Cold War security from 1945 to 1962—an era when other nations also engaged in nuclear weapons testing and proliferation. These tests exposed thousands of Americans to cancer-causing ionized radiation from nuclear fallout.

The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) is a federally funded program that provides partial restitution to those living in certain areas affected by the nuclear weapons testing from 1945 to 1962. Those affected, referred to as Downwinders, are known to have developed cancer following the nearby above-ground atomic weapons testing. RECA has awarded over $2.4 billion in benefits to more than 37,000 claimants since its inception in 1990. Compensation is paid from the Radiation Exposure Compensation Trust Fund. The Fund’s authorization is set to terminate on July 10, 2022, and claims would be barred beyond that date.

S. 4119 would extend the authorization of the Radiation Exposure Compensation Trust Fund through two years from the date of enactment of this bill. Claims could continue to be submitted during that period, but no later.

Interesting Facts Overlooked by the Media Ron DeSantis, why is he a name to remember? I particularly like the last two (2) paragraphs of course, 60 Minutes had a hit piece on DeSantis the Governor of Florida – but failed to disclose these facts:

Ronald Dion DeSantis was born on September 14, 1978, in Jacksonville, Florida, the son of Karen (née Rogers) and Ronald DeSantis!

[1] He is of Italian descent!

[2] His family moved to Orlando, Florida, before relocating to Dunedin, Florida, when he was six years old!

[3] In 1991, he was a member of the Little League team from Dunedin National that made it to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania!

[4] After graduating from Dunedin High School in 1997, DeSantis attended Yale University! He was captain of Yale’s varsity baseball team and joined the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity!

[5] On the Yale baseball team, DeSantis was an outfielder; as a senior in 2001, he had the team’s best batting average at .336!

[6] He graduated from Yale in 2001 with a B.A. magna cum laude in history!

[7] He then spent a year as a history teacher at the Darlington School!

[8] DeSantis then attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 2005 with a Juris Doctor cum laude!

[9] DeSantis received his Reserve Naval officer’s commission and assignment to the Judge Advocate General’s Corps (JAG) in 2004 at the U.S. Naval Reserve Center in Dallas, Texas, while still a student at Harvard Law School!

[10] He completed Naval Justice School in 2005!

[11] Later that year, he received orders to the JAG Trial Service Office Command South East at Naval Station Mayport, Florida, as a prosecutor!

[12] In 2006, he was promoted from lieutenant, junior grade to lieutenant! He worked for the commander of Joint Task Force-Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO), working directly with detainees at the Guantanamo Bay Joint Detention Facility!

[13] In 2007, DeSantis reported to the Naval Special Warfare Command Group in Coronado, California, where he was assigned to SEAL Team One and deployed to Iraq with the troop surge as the Legal Advisor to the SEAL Commander, Special Operations Task Force-West in Fallujah!

[14] DeSantis returned to the U.S. in April 2008, at which time he was reassigned to the Naval Region Southeast Legal Service!

[15] The U.S. Department of Justice appointed him to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Middle District of Florida!

[16] DeSantis was assigned as a trial defense counsel until his honorable discharge from active duty in February 2010!

[17] He concurrently accepted a reserve commission as a Lieutenant Commander in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps of the US Navy Reserve!

[18] He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Iraq Campaign Medal!

[19 He represented Florida’s 6th congressional district in the US House of Representatives from 2013 to 2018!

Obviously, with these qualifications, he is NOT qualified to be a Democrat, or serve in a senior political position in our nation’s capital when one considers and compares the credentials of Pelosi, Schumer, Harris or Biden!

Anyone Who Criticizes Him, I Have a Request for You:

“Can you please post your “education and service to our country” in a resume so we can compare and put your opinion in perspective!”

You may know me from my roles in movies like Apollo 13 and The Green Mile, but the role that changed my life, and inspired my enduring connection to our defenders, veterans, and first responders, was as Lt. Dan in Forrest Gump.

The National Memorial Day Parade is an event like no other and this year, the American Veterans Center is bringing it BACK in full force, with 5,000+ participants marching down Constitution Avenue before a crowd of 250,000+ in-person, as well as T.V. broadcast that reaches 100 million households around the country.

I’m Jason Crow, and I represent Colorado’s 6th district in Congress. I am working hard to address the climate crisis, find solutions to the gun violence epidemic, and ensure that our government works for the people, not corporations and special interests.

Gosar Demands Answers Regarding Biden’s Disinformation Governance Board

Prescott, AZ – Congressman Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) issued the following statement after sending a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas in response to the Biden administration’s creation of a Disinformation Governance Board.

“All Americans should be deeply troubled by Mr. Biden’s decision to create a Disinformation Governance Board. The sole function of this board is to spy on American citizens and double down on this administration’s continued abuse of powers to attack Americans who disagree with its policies, smearing them as extremists.

This board is not only unconstitutional, but also purely partisan. Congress has not authorized this board, nor has it funded it. Americans have a right to speak out and share their perspective and displeasure with the federal government without the Department of Homeland Security declaring them terrorists or sharers of disinformation.

In response, I sent a letter to Secretary Mayorkas demanding answers from this administration regarding the creation of the Disinformation Governance Board including questions regarding violence caused by Black Lives Matter and Antifa in 2020 and 2021.

The creation of this board is a well-known communist practice of having the regime “tell” the people what the “truth” is. In reality, it is propaganda for the regime and the real truth will be labeled a lie or be deemed subversive,” concluded Congressman Gosar.
