Primetime investigation. On Thursday evening, all eyes were on the televised Jan. 6th committee hearings, and a group of veterans urged Arizonans to pay close attention. Here are the key takeawaysfrom the first night of public hearings, as well as important questionsthat still need answering.

Environmental Racism in South Phoenix. Our partner organization, Fuerte, just released their new project, “Environmental Racism in South Phoenix Photo Essay”. Learn about environmental racism, a term that describes how low-income and BIPOC communities are disproportionately exposed to environmental burdens (factors that compromise healthy lifestyles) and a lack of environmental benefits (factors that promote healthy lifestyles). In the essay, South Phoenix and Fountain Hills are contrasted to reveal how South Phoenix residents are subjected to environmental racism while Fountain Hills residents have the privilege of a healthy environment.

Arizonans protest gun violence. Hundreds of Arizonans came together at the State Capitol on Saturday for a March for Our Lives rally to end gun violence. In recent weeks, there have been multiple mass shootings in Arizona, and though Democrats in the Arizona Legislature have introduced numerous bills to address gun violence, Republicans voted them down without hearings. Additionally, don’t miss this piece on how police shootings should be a critical consideration in addressing America’s horrific gun violence problem.

Sunday Square Off. Don’t miss this discussion on the Jan. 6th hearing, AZ Senate and Governor primaries, and the Tempe City Council’s decision to increase police funding, despite significant pushback from voters.

Our Democracy Centers Turn Infrequent Voters in Voting Rights…

Center for Common Ground Democracy Centers: Hawkinsville, GA, Huntsville, Alabama, Roanoke and Richmond, VA, Florence, SC

We opened our first Democracy Center in Hawkinsville, Georgia in December 2020; the team knocked on 2,400 doors and had 2,100 conversations with voters before the runoff election on January 5th. Now they operate a food pantry and provide civic engagement and voter education to local community members. The model of trusted partners working year round supporting community needs, voter education and civic engagement is a successful one employed by the RNC for their “community centers”. We self-fund our non-partisan Democracy Centers and need your help.

We have started a GoFundMe campaign for our Democracy Centers; a small donation of $25 from 1,000 of our supporters and volunteers supports their 2022 Mid-Term GOTV efforts and brings us nearly to our goal.

As we work on our last 2022 primaries (South Carolina, Virginia, Arizona and Florida), our Democracy Centers have shown that when we invest in local communities, they invest in themselves and even other communities. From texting to making phone calls and sponsoring postcard parties, our Democracy Centers have stepped up not only for themselves but for other communities.

Conservative groups are pouring millions of dollars into “community centers” which is their version of Democracy Centers; however we are still self-funding. Democracy centers are registering voters, providing rides to the polls, sending postcards, making phone calls, hosting events, texting and canvassing to Get Out the Vote in their communities. When they are not in election mode, they are hosting events on gun violence prevention, distributing COVID test kits and masks, providing food and basic necessities to the most vulnerable in their community.

A tax-deductible gift of $25 purchases stamps, guys gas or pays for 100 text messages.We are using GoFundMe so that you can share this GoFundMe with friends, family and your local organizations.

Democracy Centers are located in BIPOC communities where 55% or more of registered voters have simply stopped voting. In Virginia, our rural Democracy Centers saw Black Early Voting Turnout range from 14% to 63% as voters embraced the new early voting rule changes; non-Democracy Center locations had Black Early Voting turnout between 8.55% and 15%.

We need to fund our existing Democracy Centers and want to expand into Florida, Texas and Louisiana for the General election in November. Your donation helps us prevent voters from being purged for not voting.

In January, the Senate sidelined federal voting rights legislation that would have addressed state voter suppression laws that purposefully target people of color, people with disabilities, and poor people. Since then, states have continued to introduce and pass laws that make it harder for people to vote. Tomorrow, June 9th, the public, televised hearings conducted by the January 6th investigative committee will begin.

Join us in Downtown Phoenix for a watch party from 4:30pm – 6pm. Refreshments will be provided and vaccinations are required.

For the last 11 months, a U.S. House committee has been investigating the attack on Jan. 6th and efforts by Republicans and Trump allies to overturn the 2020 election. On Thursday, they will begin to divulge the full scope of their findings, and how key figures are implicated.

Several Republican lawmakers and GOP leaders from Arizona have been previously subpoenaed by the committee for their role, including U.S Rep Paul Gosar, state Rep. Mark Finchem, AZ GOP Chair Kelli Ward, and others. They all played roles in attempting to sabotage the democratic process and overturn the will of voters, and several have been directly implicated in the planning of the event that led to the attack on January 6th.

They must be held accountable. It’s critical that Arizonans are aware of these hearings – we cannot let extremist Republicans hide their attacks on our right to vote or our democratic processes.

Gosar Votes to Defend the Second Amendment

Washington, D.C. – Representative Paul Gosar, DDS (AZ-04) issued the following statement after voting against H.R. 7910, the Unconstitutional Gun Restrictions Act, a radical and blatantly unconstitutional gun control bill.

“It didn’t take long for Joe Biden and House democrats to use the tragedies in Buffalo and Texas to push for more gun control measures. They blatantly disparage our God-given and Constitutionally protected right to self-defense. As crime rises to record levels across our country, thanks to democrat socialists who run our major cities, self-defense is more important than ever. In Washington, D.C., the democrats suggest with a straight face that if it wasn’t for a gun, these murderers would be well-adjusted individuals. Millions and millions of people are law abiding gun owners, knife owners and car owners. If a knife, car or gun is used in a crime, it is the person using those tools that should be prosecuted for their actions. Punishing law abiding gun owners is non-sensical and I won’t stand for it.

The truth is, schools remain the most unprotected institutions in America, yet democrats hide from the fact that they pushed legislation to defund school police protection and fought to remove armed police from schools. I proposed a bill to harden school security. It cost a fraction of the $62 billion we just sent to Ukraine. Our children should be our priority, not Ukrainians.

Our leaders in Washington swore oaths to defend and uphold the rights enumerated in the Constitution. And the Second Amendment places clear limitations on government power to restrict lawful gun ownership.

Today’s vote on these sweeping, authoritarian gun control laws are a betrayal to the Constitution and an assault on the rights and liberties of law-abiding gun owners and that is why I voted against it. Congress should be focusing on school safety and mental health, not gun control,” concluded Congressman Gosar.

Their witch hunt is getting out of hand. Make no mistake, they’re only coming after me because I’M FIGHTING FOR YOU! Because I won’t back down and I fight for the people who elected me trusting that I would spend every waking moment in office serving our Country.

Attack me on TV, attack me in the New York Times but to question my legal integrity with a subpoena?! I’m going to need your help, RJ Can you chip in $10, $20, $30 or more today to help me defend myself from this vicious attack so that I can get back to doing the job I was elected to do?
