Voucher expansion. Last week, Gov. Doug Ducey signed a universal school voucher bill into law, the most expansive in the country. This move will drain needed money from Arizona public schools, and direct them towards unaccountable private and religious academies, despite the fact that only 35% of Arizonans supported voucher expansion when it was on the ballot in 2018.

Ballot measures. Three voter initiatives obtained the required signatures to get on the 2022 ballot. The Arizonans for Free and Fair Elections Act would expand voting access, and the Voters’ Right to Know Act would provide transparency in campaign spending. The Protection from Predatory Debt Collection Act would limit medical debt.

Limits on filming police. Ducey also signed a law that limits filming of police. It is now illegal in Arizona to film a police officer eight feet or closer without the officer’s permission. The bill was sponsored by Rep. John Kavanagh, and comes a year after a federal investigation began into Phoenix PD’s excessive use of force and abuse of those experiencing homelesness.

If you live in Lake Havasu City, Kingman, Bullhead City or Parker, please join me for a Congressional Roundtable on Education on July 11th from 3:00 – 5:00PM at the London Bridge Resort Convention Center located at 1477 Queens Bay in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

I will be joined by educators, administrators, local leaders and others discussing several new and exciting changes for Arizona education.

For example, the United States Supreme Court (SCOTUS) recently ruled in a case out of Maine that if the state subsidizes private schools, the state cannot discriminate against religious schools. This is a major change in how funding for religious schools has been handled for decades. The Leftists had insisted that religious schools could not get taxpayer money, and SCOTUS ruled that such reasoning violates the First Amendment and constitutes a restriction on the freedom of religion.

The State of Arizona also passed a law this year that allows up to $7,000 per student to “follow the student” to whatever school the family chooses. This too is a vast and long overdue improvement that allows parents and children to select the schools that are right for them without facing a financial penalty. The Leftist school unions were the real opposition to this law as they see this money belonging to them.

One of the primary proponents of this groundbreaking achievement is State Representative Leo Biasucci (Lake Havasu) who will be at the roundtable to discuss this law. Because space is limited, please RSVP to Penny.pew@mail.house.gov and let her know that you want to attend.

USCIS Will Conduct Selected Interviews for OAW Asylum Applicants at Local Field Offices

Dear Stakeholder,

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently published a chart that lists locations where Operation Allies Welcome (OAW) asylum applicants who qualify for expeditious processing may have their asylum interviews.

What This Means

To make the interview process more convenient for applicants who live far from an asylum office, USCIS asylum officers participate in periodic “circuit rides” to USCIS field offices. Your asylum interview may be held at a USCIS field office closer to where you live if you are an OAW asylum applicant who qualifies for expeditious processing under section 2502(c) of the Extending Government Funding and Delivering Emergency Assistance Act. Visit the “Asylum” section on USCIS’ Information for Afghan Nationals page to see if you qualify for expeditious processing.

Please note that interview locations are subject to change and the interview notice will list the exact location where you should report for your asylum interview.

Why This Matters

During recent CIS Ombudsman engagements, stakeholders repeatedly expressed concern with OAW asylum applicants having to travel long distances for interviews. We appreciate all the stakeholders who alerted us to this matter and applaud USCIS’ efforts to help manage OAW applicants’ expectations with respect to how far they will need to travel for their asylum interviews.
