Celebrating 2022 with Dove and The CROWN Coalition

Thank you for supporting Dove and the CROWN Coalition’s mission to end race-based hair discrimination nationwide. We are excited to share the highlights that has made 2022 a year to remember, including: legislative wins, 3rd Annual National CROWN Day and more!

Legislative Wins 

In 2022, the CROWN Act or legislation inspired by the CROWN Act passed in 5 new states (ME, LA, MA, TN, & AK) and 4 municipalities making hair discrimination illegal in a total of 19 states, 44 municipalities and 1 U.S. Territory.  

On March 18th, the CROWN Act (Federal Bill H.R. 2116) passed the House of Representatives for the second time. On December 15th, Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) took to the United States Senate Floor and made the case for the passage of the CROWN Act by unanimous consent. Disappointingly, the CROWN Act did not pass in the U.S. Senate, but we remain grateful for Senator Booker’s bi-partisan leadership as the original lead sponsor in Congress.

It is paramount that we band together to raise our collective voices and activate our civic duty to implore our federal elected officials to #PassTheCROWN. Please continue to share the CROWN Act petition across your social media pages and encourage friends and family to do the same. 

3rd Annual National CROWN Day  

We kicked off this year’s National CROWN Day with a week-long celebration of Black beauty, sisterhood, and community with a strong call-to-action to #PasstheCROWN!  

From the 2022 BET Awards on June 26th to the unveiling of the second CROWN-inspired mural in New Orleans and our 2nd Annual CROWN Awards, 2022 CROWN weekend is one to remember!  Check out a video recap of the weekend HERE!

• Dove Releases NEW study: The 2021 Dove CROWN Study for Girls revealing the unveiling the alarming rate at which Black girls can experience hair bias and discrimination in schools. 
• SoulCaps Officially Approved by FINA, bringing inclusive swim caps into competitive swimming 
• 16K SAG-AFTRA members urging Congress to pass the CROWN Act.  
• Sponsored by Dove, new Docuseries “Hair Tales” explores the history, heritage and culture of Black hair
