In the minds of many Americans, elections only happen every two years – presidential elections and midterms. But federal elections account for only 0.1% of the total number of elected positions in the United States. In fact, 96% of all elected positions are for local offices, and another 3.9% for state offices.

Most of these local and state elections are “off-year” elections, meaning they take place in the odd-numbered years between presidential and midterm races. And even more shocking? Depending on the cycle, ~70% of state and local races go uncontested with only one name on the ballot.

That’s what makes 2023 such a critical year for the Forward Party. We’re recruiting candidates to run under the Forward Party banner for local and state offices. What we accomplish in 2023 and the bench we build will propel our movement forward and finally begin to give voters real choice, a voice, and power in directing what happens in their communities. 

In total, there are 500,396 local elected positions and 18,749 state positions, compared to just 537 federal officials. If the Forward Party is going to be successful in our mission to build a new kind of party focused on the needs of our communities, we need to start from the ground up. That’s why we’re focused on the 99.9% of elected positions that play a more direct impact in your everyday life and in shaping the future of our communities.
