Eighty-six years ago, on June 6, 1939, the German ocean liner M.S. St. Louis set sail carrying 937 passengers — nearly all Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany. They were searching for safety. But the U.S., along with Cuba and Canada, turned them away.

Left with no other choice, the ship was forced to return to Europe. Of its passengers, 254 people were later murdered in the Holocaust.

The M.S. St. Louis is a stark reminder of what happens when nations close their doors to those seeking refuge. And today, history is repeating itself.

On his first day in office, President Trump suspended the entry of refugees from around the world, including thousands who had already passed rigorous vetting and were approved to begin new lives in safety. Now, they remain stranded in limbo to this day.

The lesson of the M.S. St. Louis is clear: people die when we deny safety to refugees.

For decades, leaders have solemnly promised “Never again.” But promises mean little without action. This administration is choosing to ignore the painful lessons of its past. HIAS is here to remind them.

For more than 120 years, HIAS has been unwavering in our commitment to welcome the stranger because we know what happens when the world looks away. Today, we continue that legacy through legal representation, mental health care, economic empowerment, and vital services that help people rebuild their lives with dignity.

From families at the U.S.-Mexico border to refugees fleeing violence in Ukraine and Sudan, people are once again in need of safety. It’s up to all of us to make sure the U.S. does not turn them away and remains ready to welcome the stranger.

In commemoration of the anniversary of the St. Louis being turned away by the U.S. and as we approach World Refugee Day on June 20, we ask you to reflect with us:

Reddit has filed a lawsuit against Anthropic, claiming the AI company scraped its platform data without consent or compensation to train its models.

Key details:

Reddit alleges Anthropic’s bots accessed its servers over 100,000 times—even after the company claimed it had blocked them.
Negotiations for a licensing deal reportedly fell through. Reddit points to its existing partnerships with OpenAI and Google as precedent.
The lawsuit also cites Anthropic’s own acknowledgments: Claude, its AI model, has referenced Reddit content in outputs—evidence, Reddit claims, of training on the platform’s data.

Now, Reddit is asking for damages and a court order to block Anthropic from using its content going forward.

Why it matters:
Lawsuits over AI training data are nothing new—but this one stands out. It’s one of the first times a major tech platform is taking direct legal action. And the context raises eyebrows:

Sam Altman (OpenAI CEO) owns nearly 9% of Reddit.
