In most cases, animals are surrendered because of things completely out of their control: their owner passed away, could no longer care for them, had to move, or went through a major life change like a divorce. It’s usually about tough luck, not bad behavior.  Sure, some shelter pets may need training or support—but that’s true of pets from anywhere.

Witches in pop culture rarely go anywhere without their loyal, eerie-looking sidekick—and more often than not, it’s a black cat. That link between black cats and the supernatural isn’t just a cinematic trope.

Back in the Middle Ages, black cats were believed to be tied to the occult.

In fact, a 13th-century papal bull called Vox in Rama even labeled cats—especially black ones—as agents of Satan. From there, the myth snowballed: to see a black cat was to invite bad luck.

And it’s not just cats. Black dogs have long been cast as creepy or threatening—from the Grim in Harry Potter to the infamous hound in The Hound of the Baskervilles. These shadowy portrayals have stuck with us, shaping how many people still subconsciously feel about black-furred pets.

But here’s where it gets really unsettling: these old stories and superstitions are still affecting adoption rates today. Black cats and dogs are often the last to be chosen in shelters, and sadly, they’re more likely to be euthanized when space runs out.
