When Abraham was called, he was literally living in Babylon on the plain of Shinar in the city of Ur. He did not come from a God-fearing family, and there is no evidence that he was converted at the time of Genesis 12:1. Every indication is that he, too, was a heathen. As we shall see, every called person begins in idolatry.

God had in all likelihood begun to work with him, preparing him for his calling by guiding his thinking to begin to question areas of life he had previously accepted without question. Historical traditions indicate that his family was of a priestly caste, and perhaps he was already questioning the validity of the false gods he served.

Acts 7:2-4 clarifies a few things relating to the early period of his calling:

And [Stephen] said, “Brethren and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran, and said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’ Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, when his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.”

What is included in God’s appearance is not known. Whether it was literal, in a vision, or by dream is not explained anywhere else. The element we need to understand is that, as with us, Abraham did not earn his calling. He had done nothing to earn or deserve God’s notice.

Isaiah 51:2 adds a further piece of information worth considering: “Look to Abraham your father, and to Sarah who bore you; for I called him alone, and blessed him and increased him.” While Sarah is at least mentioned, no other family members are included within the scope of this statement. It appears that several members of Abraham’s family depended on him, since much of his family left with him, yet God makes clear that Abraham was the only one spiritually called.

To how many of us has a similar thing happened? Why does this happen? Nobody knows! It is unanswerable. God shows mercy to whom He shows mercy. He loves Jacob but loves Esau less by comparison, despite their being twins. He accepts Abel and rejects Cain. He chooses only Noah among millions of others to whom He could have given grace.

This we know: At some time before leaving Babylon, God became a living reality to Abraham to a degree no one else near and dear to him experienced. Even amidst his personal self-seeking and self-pleasing, he was motivated to leave his set routines of life. It must have been similar to what Job experienced when he said, “I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees You” (Job 42:5).

Whether the opening of Abraham’s mind was gradual or sudden, God had graciously revealed Himself enough to make him move, and he did so to the extent of leaving his homeland and journeying over 1,200 miles, probably on foot or at best by donkey or cart, to a land known for violent weather, especially for its high temperatures.

Abraham was already 70 years old, yet he severed virtually every relationship that matters to normal human concepts of life and well-being. For a long time, stability became a thing of the past, considering that he never again dwelt in a home with foundations. This may seem an unusually hard and harsh requirement. Nevertheless, he embarked on a journey into an utterly unknown future.

What can we learn from this God-engineered example? Undoubtedly, He was testing Abraham, a process we should expect a measure of in our calling as well. We may never have to leave our homeland and set out on a long journey without knowing where we are headed, but it is highly likely that disruptions will accompany our calling.

A primary instruction God wants us to understand from Abraham’s calling is that we must make a complete break from our old lives. We must clearly begin to sever ourselves from the old, “inner” life that was implanted in our character by our living according to the course of this world (Ephesians 2:2).

The Ocean Race launches Relay4Nature, a global collaboration for…

The launch of Relay4Nature marks the start of an exciting new collaborative programme ahead of this year’s major global environmental and ocean summits. An initiative of The Ocean Race, Relay4Nature will involve a baton passing from team to team, shining a spotlight on ocean leaders, innovators, and advocates.

Relay4Nature is the product of two years of collaborative work between Richard Brisius, Chairman of The Ocean Race and Ambassador Peter Thomson, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean.

Relay4Nature will connect a global community of ocean advocates, giving them a platform to petition for a new and respectful relationship with nature. They will be encouraged to contribute messages encouraging a commitment to the ocean, highlighting the globally shared responsibility to protect marine ecosystems.  The messages will act as a call to action to urge world leaders to unite for stronger ocean governance, based on science and stewardship, for future generations.  

The Relay4Nature baton was presented to Ambassador Thomson at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London on 30 April and will continue its journey with participating teams in the Prologue Race and The Ocean Race Europe.  The bespoke baton has been created by the visual artist Tania Kovats, whose work focuses on how art can address environmental challenges. Watch the Making of video here.

The baton will first pass to the European Commissioner, Virginijus Sinkevičius, in Klaipėda, Lithuania on 7th May 2021.   The Commissioner will pass the baton on to the skipper of Ambersail-2, Rokas Milevičius, to begin its passage between teams in Prologue Race, which stops in Gdynia, Poland and Stockholm, Sweden before being part of The Ocean Race Europe, which will start in Lorient, France and visit Portugal and Spain before finishing in Genoa, Italy in mid-June.  The baton and its collected messages will then be delivered to COP26 in Glasgow in November 2021.

Relay4Nature will continue during the training, hospitality and racing programmes as teams prepare for the next edition of The Ocean Race, which will start in October 2022. Teams will be encouraged to engage with their key stakeholders, sponsors, host ports and affiliated organisations, contributing messages to Relay4Nature before passing the baton on to the next team. 

“Relay4Nature is a great initiative,” said Ambassador Thomson.  “The basic concept is to underline the inseparable link between the upcoming biodiversity, environmental and oceans conferences, with particular emphasis on COP26 in Glasgow.  It brings all the challenging excitement and endurance of ocean racing to the process of transforming our world to net zero carbon by 2050.”

“The ambition is to ensure connectivity so that whether you are from a biodiversity or climate community, we need to work together to protect the ocean’s wellbeing. Through Relay4Nature, we want to convey this message from conference to conference, to underline we have one common problem, which is the profligacy of our greenhouse gas emissions.” 

“A healthy ocean is fundamental to life on Earth. It’s our life support system, producing over half of the planet’s oxygen and providing food for billions of people. The ocean also plays a hugely important role in climate regulation. Since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, it has absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat caused by human impact.  However, despite being the largest habitat on earth and producing some 50% of the world’s biosphere, the ocean still receives far too little attention from world leaders.” He concludes.

Richard Brisius, Chairman of The Ocean Race comments: “By using our sport, we aim to highlight that world leaders must strike a fair deal for people and planet and emphasise that the ocean and climate nexus needs to be at the top of their agenda.”

“Through the messages our teams will collect as they pass on the baton, we are asking world leaders to unite for effective, comprehensive and collaborative global ocean governance, placing nature, human and ocean rights at the centre of policy and action.”

About Relay4Nature

The concept of Relay4Nature was first conceived in January 2020, but with the global pandemic postponing 2020’s key summits to this year, for the past 12 months Relay4Nature has been working behind the scenes with The Ocean Race teams to create momentum around the baton’s future mission. To date, a prototype of the Relay4Nature baton, has completed over 33,000 nautical miles. This has included: a global non-stop circumnavigation with Boris Hermann and Team Malizia in the Vendee Globe; two transatlantic passages with Charlie Enright and 11th Hour Racing Team; breaking a race record around Denmark with Bouwe Bekking and Team Childhood; and completing the Vendee Arctique race, again with Team Malizia. The baton additionally took part in the inaugural Mirpuri Foundation Sailing Trophy in late June 2020, with the Mirpuri Sailing Team.

The last edition of the race was the closest in history, with three teams virtually tied, approaching the finish line. Congressman Gosar and Team of Volunteers Clean Up Garbage…

PRESCOTT, AZ – Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) issued the following statement after visiting the southern border with his staff and volunteers in San Luis, Arizona to clean up garbage left by illegal aliens crossing the border.

“I was just at the border again this past week filling countless bags of trash from all the litter, drugs and crack-pipes dumped on our ground by illegal aliens when they cross our southern border.  

In addition to the health, humanitarian and national security crisis there also exits a growing environmental crisis caused by the open border policies of the Biden Administration. We picked up over a thousand pounds of rubbish and literally filled countless trash bags. 

I am grateful to San Luis Mayor Sanchez for inviting my staff and me to help clean up the horrific mess. Mr. Biden’s open border policies are wrecking our beautiful desert land and unique ecosystems. 

“Thank you, Congressman Gosar for your continuous support of our Ports of Entry, thank you and your volunteers for helping us clean up our deserts, it was an honor to have you and your staff spend the day with us,” added Mayor Gerardo Sanchez.

“I am thankful to Mayor Sanchez for inviting my staff and me to participate in the clean-up.  I am also grateful for the nearly fifty volunteers that helped out. It’s now been more than five weeks since Mr. Biden named Kamala Harris as the Border Czar, yet neither she nor Mr. Biden have visited the border to see first-hand the crisis they created. Mr. Biden needs to recognize the crisis, finally visit the border, and change his disastrous policies,” concluded Rep. Gosar.

With a promise to create one of the most connected sporting events in history, Inmarsat, the world leader in global, mobile satellite communications, will power The Ocean Race with its cutting-edge technology as Official Satellite Communications Partner for the sixth consecutive time.

Inmarsat has been selected to deliver its global satellite communication and safety services for The Ocean Race Europe 2021 and The Ocean Race 2022-23 in a new exclusive agreement, which continues the successful partnership, which began with the 2001 Volvo Ocean Race.

For the 14th edition of sailing’s greatest round-the-world challenge, Inmarsat’s reliable connectivity, accessed via the world’s most reliable global mobile satellite L-Band network, is set to enable ground-breaking advancements in onboard communications as the Race management and competing teams utilise the technology to produce engaging and immersive content at a level never seen before.

Inmarsat’s L-Band network will provide the crucial connectivity, safety and tracking services for the IMOCA 60s and one-design VO65s race yachts, even in the most remote ocean regions and most adverse weather conditions. Inmarsat’s solutions will drive the Race’s digital content delivery including live drone footage, with the aim to beam more information, images and video ashore than ever before and bring all the excitement of the event to fans and media back home.

Using Inmarsat airtime services and IsatPhone 2 satellite phones, the teams will be equipped with FleetBroadband 500 and FleetBroadband 250 to provide an ‘always-on’ connection through the Inmarsat FleetBroadband service, allowing applications such as internet access, emails, calls, weather reporting and telemedicine. It also features streaming IP available on demand, for live applications such as high-quality video streaming. Inmarsat C will also enable a two-way data connection for emergency services and 24/7 tracking. Inmarsat will also demonstrate its Fleet Xpress high-bandwidth services for yachting during the race.

Inmarsat services will also support the real-time transfer of scientific data as teams measure ocean conditions as they race across the world, including through some of the most remote parts of the planet.

Since 1973, The Ocean Race has been described as the longest and toughest professional sporting event in the world. The next edition of The Ocean Race, scheduled to start from Alicante, Spain in October 2022, will visit 10 international cities, including the start port and the Grand Finale finish in Genoa, Italy in the summer of 2023. Two classes will compete, with the addition of the high-tech, foiling IMOCA 60 class adding a design and technical element. The one-design VO65 fleet will race on its third lap of the planet in 2022, with an emphasis on competition, youth and crew diversity.

Held for the first time, The Ocean Race Europe will start on May 29, 2021in Lorient, France, and finish three weeks later in Genova, Italy. Crews from all over the world will race in foiling IMOCA 60s and one-design VO65s from the North Atlantic coast of Europe into the Mediterranean Sea, with stops in Cascais, Portugal and Alicante, the home port of The Ocean Race.

The Ocean Race Europe
