WHAT’S AN INFIDEL?The author, Rick Mathes, is a well-known leader in prison ministry. The man who walks with God always gets to his destination. If you have a pulse you have a purpose.
The Muslim religion is the fastest growing religion per capita in the United States, especially in the minority races.
Last month I attended my annual training session that’s required for maintaining my state prison security clearance. During the training session there was a presentation by three speakers representing the Roman Catholic, Protestant and Muslim faiths, who each explained their beliefs.
I was particularly interested in what the Islamic Imam had to say. The Muslim gave a great presentation of the basics of Islam, complete with a video. After the presentations, time was provided for questions and answers. When it was my turn, I directed my question to the Muslim and asked: ‘Please, correct me if I’m wrong, but I understand that most Imams and clerics of Islam have declared a holy jihad [Holy war] against the infidels of the world and, that by killing an infidel, (which is a command to all Muslims) they are assured of a place in heaven. If that’s the case, can you give me the definition of an infidel?’
There was no disagreement with my statements and, without hesitation, he replied, ‘Non-believers!’
I responded, ‘so, let me make sure I have this straight. All followers of Allah have been commanded to kill everyone who is not of your faith so they can have a place in heaven. Is that correct?’
The expression on his face changed from one of authority and command to that of a little boy who had just been caught with his hand in the cookie jar.’ He sheepishly replied, ‘Yes.’
I then stated, ‘Well, sir, I have a real problem trying to imagine The Pope commanding all Catholics to kill those of your faith or Dr. Stanley ordering all Protestants to do the same in order to guarantee them a place in heaven!’
The Muslim was speechless.
I continued, ‘I also have a problem with being your friend when you and your brother clerics are telling your followers to kill me! Let me ask you a question: Would you rather have your Allah, who tells you to kill me in order for you to go to heaven, or my Jesus who tells me to love you because I am going to heaven and He wants you to be there with me?’
You could have heard a pin drop. Needless to say, the organizers and/or promoters of the ‘Diversification’ training seminar were not happy with my way of dealing with the Islamic Imam, and exposing the truth about the Muslims’ beliefs.
In twenty years there will be enough Muslim voters in the U.S. to elect the President. I think everyone in the U.S. should be required to read this, but with the ACLU, there is no way this will be widely publicized, unless each of us sends it on! This is your chance to make a difference.

🥙 eat your way to a healthier life
Our colleague Sandee LaMotte recently spent some time traveling in Greece. As a health journalist, she came back with some new perspectives on the Mediterranean diet — an award-winning style of healthy eating. Read more from her about her travels below, but be warned it may trigger a serious bout of wanderlust.
If LaMotte’s photos and stories stir you, we invite you to sign up for the latest newsletter series we’re launching next week — CNN’s Eat, But Better: Mediterranean Style. LaMotte wrote it just before jetting off on her Greek getaway. In her series, you’ll get a full eight weeks of recipes for every meal of the day, including brunch, and tips on how to introduce Mediterranean foods to kids. ☀️ what we can learn from the Mediterranean lifestyle
The Greek islands! It was a bucket list trip, made even more precious as a getaway after the painful pandemic travel drought. Not long after booking the journey, I was given the opportunity to write a newsletter about the Mediterranean diet, which I had been covering for years at CNN.
I was going to be able to see, smell, taste and take pictures of many of the Greek foods I was writing about, based on recipes handed down over the centuries from the yiayiás to their grandchildren.

Creamy, rich Greek yogurt topped with walnuts and honey was more like a dessert than a classic breakfast. A freshly created spanakopita, the beloved Greek spinach pie, was like nothing I’d tasted in the United States. What a feast for the taste buds! And it didn’t hurt that it was eaten with a view of the cliffs of Santorini.
Traditional Greek salads, called horiatiki, were a revelation. For one, there was no lettuce — just lots of plump, juicy tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers and onions, laced with many varieties of Greek olives, topped with large slabs of fresh feta, and doused in olive oil.
Speaking of olive oil — the king of the Mediterranean diet — it’s such a part of Greek life that if locals think someone is a bit crazy, they say they are “choris ládi” or “losing oil.”
Roasted veggies glistening with olive oil get a sprinkle of seeds and herbs. Zucchini fritters packed with fresh vegetables and herbs were fried lightly in olive oil and served with another Greek staple: tzatziki, a yogurt-based dip full of cucumber, dill and lemon.

Herbs and spices take precedence over salt and pepper to flavor Mediterranean dishes. Fresh herbs are so important that Greeks grow them in every nook and cranny. In Athens, I saw pots of herbs in windowsills, along sidewalks next to parked cars, and in the base of trees that line the streets. And don’t forget fresh fruit — orange and lemon trees also grow along the sidewalks.
But the Mediterranean “diet” is so much more than food. It’s also based on movement — walking, biking, gardening — mindful eating and the gathering of friends and family.

Each newsletter includes an original, staff-tested recipe by Rahaf Al Bochi — a registered dietitian nutritionist and founder of Olive Tree Nutrition — an introduction to traditional spices, fun facts about the region and healthy challenges you can use to incorporate the Mediterranean manner of life into your own. Won’t you join me?

Good morning RJ,
As of late September, water levels at the San Carlos Reservoir near Globe reached only 37,000 acre-feet, leaving little water for farmers and their crops. According to the irrigation district, monsoons didn’t help as much as you might think.
Plus, as reservoirs like San Carlos continue to dry up throughout the Southwest, sustaining groundwater will become a vital tactic for Arizona. A new report released by the San Carlos Apache Tribe shows that the proposed Resolution Copper mine would use billions of gallons of water over the mine’s lifetime — much of it coming from groundwater.
Where have all the teachers gone? A new survey shows that Arizona’s teacher shortage is only getting worse. The problem has gotten so challenging that, according to the data, 55% of all vacancies school districts managed to fill for this academic year were filled by people who are not certified educators.

The Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman (CIS Ombudsman) invites stakeholders to participate in a listening session to learn about DHS’s new Office of the Immigration Detention Ombudsman on Thursday, October 14, 2021 from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. ET.
During this session, the CIS Ombudsman will engage in a conversation with the Acting Immigration Detention Ombudsman, David Gersten, and some of his staff, to introduce DHS’s new office, provide an overview of its mission, and gather input from stakeholders. The Immigration Detention Ombudsman is a separate office from the CIS Ombudsman and is independent of both U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Congress mandated that DHS establish this new office to assist individuals with complaints about the conditions of immigration detention, conduct oversight of detention facilities, and develop policy recommendations related to immigration detention in the United States.
The CIS Ombudsman’s engagement will be an information sharing and gathering session. Participants may submit written questions and comments during the engagement. We invite you to register for this webinar using the link below.
Find out the many ways on how the CIS Ombudsman works for you.
CIS Ombudsman Customer Satisfaction Survey: Please complete the CIS Ombudsman Customer Satisfaction Survey. We appreciate your feedback.
CIS Ombudsman’s Annual Reports: By statute, the Office of the Citizenship and Immigration Services Ombudsman submits an Annual Report to Congress by June 30 of each year. The CIS Ombudsman’s Annual Report must provide a summary of the most pervasive and serious problems encountered by individuals and employers applying for immigration benefits with USCIS. The Annual Report also reviews past recommendations to improve USCIS programs and services. Click here to view current and past Annual Reports.
Public Engagement: The CIS Ombudsman meets with stakeholders across the country to learn how the delivery of immigration benefits and services impacts communities and to share information about how our office can help. Please visit our website if you want to learn more about our outreach efforts.
Asking the CIS Ombudsman for Help: The CIS Ombudsman provides an impartial and independent perspective to USCIS in an attempt to resolve problems with pending cases. The CIS Ombudsman does not have the authority to make or change USCIS decisions. Before contacting the CIS Ombudsman, you must first try to resolve your problem through USCIS customer service avenues. Learn more on how the CIS Ombudsman can help here.
Recommendations: The CIS Ombudsman identifies systemic problems that individuals and employers face when seeking services from USCIS and makes recommendations with the goal of influencing change and improving the services at USCIS for both those who apply for and those who administer immigration benefits. In addition to the formal reviews and recommendations that the CIS Ombudsman issues to USCIS, we also work in less formal ways to identify emerging issues and begin discussions with USCIS about how problems can be addressed. Peter ,
Our years of advocacy for AFT members around the country is paying off.
We want everyone who wants to attend college to be able to do so, but it has become increasingly unaffordable. More than 42 million Americans, including many of our members, now owe $1.7 trillion in student debt.
Since 2016, the AFT has been working to address and abate this student debt crisis. We hosted thousands of debt clinics, pressed lawmakers for changes and took this fight to the courts. We took on one of the largest loan servicers in the country, Navient, and then in July of 2019, in a groundbreaking legal action, we sued then-Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos for mismanaging the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program and leaving tens of thousands of borrowers with nowhere to turn when their relief was denied.
I am pleased to share that yesterday, Oct. 12, we reached a settlement in Weingarten v. DeVos. The Department of Education led by Secretary Miguel Cardona agreed to work with us to ensure relief for the countless borrowers who relied on the promise of Public Service Loan Forgiveness.
The department has agreed that a promise made is a promise kept.
Millions of Americans will now have their loans completely forgiven or will be properly enrolled in a forgiveness program crediting their years of past payments, putting them much closer to full forgiveness. The AFT’s nurses, educators, public employees, school staff and higher education staff will all benefit from these changes.
Last week’s announcement of a temporary waiver of many PSLF program provisions was big. The Department of Education made much-needed changes, expanding who qualifies for PSLF and making the system more manageable. (If you will qualify under this waiver, it’s critical to apply for it by Oct. 31, 2022.)
This week, with the settlement of Weingarten v. DeVos, we have more good news to share. Since the creation of the program in 2007, 98 percent of all borrowers who have applied for PSLF have been denied. With the Education Department’s temporary waiver, plus this settlement, every one of those borrowers’ PSLF applications will be reviewed and processed through a new review procedure.
We expect this new review process—which is the core of this settlement—to result in complete discharge for tens of thousands of student loan borrowers across the country, including teachers, nurses, firefighters and others eligible for PSLF.
The Biden administration continues to work on implementation of these changes, with input from the AFT and others, to ensure a fast, clear and simple process so public service workers can get full credit for the payments they made toward PSLF and soon see a zero balance on their student loan statements. And the AFT continues to work on behalf of our 1.7 million members to get them the help they deserve through hundreds of AFT student debt clinics and through our partnership with Summer, an online resource that helps members navigate and reduce student loan debt.
If you are a current AFT member who may be affected by this settlement:
The AFT will help you navigate this new process with our partner Summer. Working with Summer, AFT members already have saved $500 million on student loans. Summer helps AFT members take the steps necessary to qualify for PSLF, including under the just-announced temporary waiver. AFT members can sign up for a free account with Summer here: https://www.meetsummer.org/pslf
If you are a borrower who works in public service and want individualized help from a PSLF expert, you can join the AFT as an associate member now and access a Summer account: https://www.aft.org/joinsummer
I’m so happy with how this has worked out. We’re seeing firsthand the difference it makes when we have a president and a secretary of education who believe in education and in delivering on promises made to Americans.
In unity,
Randi Weingarten
AFT President
P.S.: If you want to stay up to date on our advocacy efforts around student debt and other issues, be sure to sign up for my e-Activist list.
