Biden Tells Dems to Unite Behind Him

President Biden sent a letter to congressional Democrats on Monday, telling lawmakers he would not step down and demanding the party unite behind his leadership.

In the letter, linked here, Biden wrote that he has had conversations with party leaders, elected officials, and voters and believes he is “the best person to beat Donald Trump in 2024.”

Biden also called into a morning news show on Monday and blasted the party “elites” trying to push him out, saying the average voter wants him to stay in the race.

A recent poll found that 72% of registered voters want Biden to exit the race, up from 63% in February.

Boeing to Plead Guilty for 737 Max Crashes

Boeing is set to plead guilty to criminal fraud conspiracy related to the fatal crashes of two 737 MAX airplanes in 2018 and 2019.

Under the plea deal, pending a federal judge’s approval, the company would face a $243.6 million fine and three years’ oversight by a corporate probation monitor.

Additionally, Boeing must invest $455 million in compliance and safety programs and agree to board meetings with crash victims’ families.

The guilty plea gives Boeing a criminal conviction, which may complicate its ability to secure future government contracts. Those deals accounted for 32% of its $78 billion annual revenue in 2023.

Beryl Leaves Millions Without Power

Hurricane Beryl hit Texas Monday, killing two and leaving more than 2 million people and businesses without power in the Houston area and knocking down hundreds of trees.

Beryl was downgraded to a tropical storm soon after making landfall, but the National Hurricane Center said high winds and flash flooding would continue as the storm pushed inland. It was one of the earliest hurricanes to hit Texas.

Forecasters have issued tornado watches and warnings across Texas, Louisiana, and Arkansas for the next day or two as the storm winds down. Here’s a list of cities under tornado warnings.

🐤 Get Ready: 3 High Short Interest Stocks Poised…

GOOD MORNING

The S&P 500 started the week cautiously but on a positive note, rising to a new all-time high. The market is cautious because the Consumer Price Index is due on Wednesday and may raise fear of higher interest rates. However, the latest PCE price index aligned with trends, suggesting the CPI will show that consumer-level inflation is cooling, which should help lift stock prices. The market is banking on the FOMC to cut rates at least once by the end of the year, and the committee needs this data to cooperate to do it.

The S&P 500 is in an uptrend and on track to extend its rally through year’s end. The caveat is that the index is due for a periodic correction and is set to fall. Divergences in the MACD suggest the market is tired, near a peak, and ready to sell, given a reason. The CPI report could give a reason; if it doesn’t, there are always corporate earnings to worry about. The Q2 earnings reporting season kicks off this Friday when JPMorgan Chase releases its Q2 results.

Recipe of the Day: Braised Beef

Ingredients

2 lbs round steaks, cut 1/2 inch thick
3 slices bacon
1 cup water
1/4 cup carrot, chopped
1/4 cup celery, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
1 medium bay leaf
2 teaspoons butter
1 tablespoon onion, chopped
1/4 cup mushroom, chopped
1/4 cup sour cream
2 tablespoons capers

Directions

Cut steak in serving sized pieces.
Cook bacon in a large skillet until crisp; remove, crumble, and set aside.
Brown steak in bacon drippings.
Add water, carrot, celery, and bay leaf; cover and cook over low heat 1 1/2 hours, or until meat is tender, stirring occasionally.
Remove bay leaf and remove beef to a serving platter and keep warm.
Meanwhile, in a separate skillet, melt butter over medium low heat. Add onions and mushrooms and saute until tender, about 5 minutes. Add to first skillet and blend with an immersion blender or process in stand up blender.
Stir in sour cream and capers; heat through. Pour gravy over steaks; garnish with bacon crumbles and chopped parsley.

Here are just some of the events on this date in the past.

•	On this day in 1877: The first Wimbledon tournament began at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club in suburban London.
•	In 1943: Allied forces launched Operation Husky, which aimed at driving out the Axis control over the Mediterranean, notably Sicily. The operation led to the eventual downfall of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
•	In 1955: The Russell-Einstein Manifesto was released by mathematician Bertrand Russell during a news conference. Signed by renowned scientists at the time, the manifesto called on world leaders to heed the dangers of nuclear weapons and find peaceful resolutions to international conflicts.
•	In 2001: The British show “The Office” debuted on the BBC.
•	In 2011: Voters overwhelmingly chose independence and declared South Sudan a separate sovereign state from Sudan.
•	In 2020: WHO announced that the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes COVID-19, is transmissible through the air and could be spread by asymptomatic carriers.

Rebecca Buckwalter-Plaza from the Alliance for Justice

Rebecca Buckwalter-Plaza is an activist, advocate, and attorney best known for successfully suing former President Donald Trump under the First Amendment. Rebecca will discuss the recent Supreme Court case claiming that presidents are above the law.

Noelle Damico from the Workers Circle

Noelle Damico is the Director of Social Justice at the Workers Circle. With 30 years of experience in grassroots and institutional organizing in local, regional, and national settings, Noelle is also an adjunct teaching organizing and political advocacy at NYU Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. Noelle will discuss how you can break the cycle and feel empowered to take action for democracy!
