What is Life Insurance… and Do I Need It?Note: This is a three-part series discussing life insurance, how much it costs, and which type might be best for you with helpful resources from Haven Life Insurance Agency. After this post, be sure to see Part 2 and Part 3 in the next few newsletters.
Much like filing taxes or renewing your vehicle registration, life insurance can be one of those “adulting” things you might tend to put off. But if you have loved ones who depend on your income, you owe it to yourself—or more accurately, to them—to learn about your options to avoid a potentially disastrous financial situation.
Let’s start with the basics.
What is life insurance?
A life insurance policy is a contract between an insurance company and an individual. In exchange for regular payments, the insurance company agrees to pay a lump sum of money to a designated beneficiary if the insured person dies within the terms of the contract.
There are a million different life insurance policies, but they all boil down to two main categories—termor permanent. We’ll cover these in more detail in a later newsletter, but for now, here are the main differences:
Insuring your life may sound a little morbid, but it’s a valuable component of a smart financial plan. Here’s why:
…And the list goes on. In general, life insurance isn’t really about the person who pays for the policy. It’s about protecting loved ones if the worst were to happen.
Do I need life insurance?
The best way to know if you need life insurance is to look at the people around you. Do you have loved ones who rely on your income—people who would suffer financially if you passed away? If so, then you should consider getting life insurance.
Surprisingly, that question doesn’t just apply to income-earners—consider the amount of money it would take to hire out the duties of a stay-at-home parent who unexpectedly passes away. That’s a disastrous situation no matter what, but your family could at least lessen the financial impact with life insurance.
And in some situations, single people might need life insurancetoo—specifically those with debt.
Okay but… how much does it actually cost? We’ll discuss that topic in next month’s newsletter, so don’t miss it! (Spoiler: it could be cheaper than you think.)

Dear Stakeholder,
U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) recently announced that applicants seeking a change of status to F-1 (student status) no longer need to apply to change or extend their initial nonimmigrant status to prevent a gap in status while their initial F-1 change of status application is pending.
Under the new policy, USCIS said it will grant the change of status to F-1 effective the day an applicant’s Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status is approved. F-1 students are no longer required to “bridge the gap” by continuously applying for and obtaining status all the way up to 30 days before their academic program start date, while their initial F-1 change of status application is pending. USCIS is in the process of revising the Form I-539 instructions to reflect these changes.
The CIS Ombudsman has recommended this policy change to USCIS through leadership discussions and informal recommendations. As such, our office commends USCIS for taking this step to reduce workload redundancies and minimize costs and other barriers that impede access to immigration benefits for international students.

July 22, 2021PHOENIX — A recent report found Arizona’s job recovery rate coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic is 87%, only behind Idaho and Utah for the best in the nation.
The nationwide job recovery rate is 70% following mandatory closures of businesses deemed non-essential to stop the spread of the virus, according to an employment report released on July 15 from the Arizona Commerce Authority.
The strong recovery is being attributed to the Grand Canyon State’s robust economy before the pandemic hit.
“That allowed the economy during the initial months to be less impacted by the pandemic,” Doug Walls, labor market information director for the authority’s Office of Economic Opportunity, said.
Travel and tourism industries, the hardest-hit leisure, have recovered 113,000 jobs.
Arizona’s hiring in the private sector usually slows in the summer as schools close and tourism slows during excessive heat.
However, Arizona is playing catchup in 2021.
“The private sector had averaged a loss of 9,000 jobs in the month of June,” Walls said. “To see a gain of 26,000 jobs is significant.”
If COVID-19 vaccination rates improve, Walls expects full job recovery in a year.
“With rates of recovery that we had been seeing over the last couple of months, it’s possible that we reach pre-pandemic levels even before the middle of ’22,” he said.
Arizona’s labor force reached 3.6 million people in June, with 39,346 more residents working than in February of 2020.
The state’s unemployment rate slightly rose to 6.8%, indicating that more people are looking for work as government subsidies for unemployment insurance and rental assistance subside.View the full article online

WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Paul A. Gosar, D.D.S. (AZ-04) issued the following statement after the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources voted to allow the nomination of Tracy Stone-Manning to lead the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to move to the full Senate for a confirmation vote.
“Today’s action by Democrat senators on the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources to allow a known eco-terrorist to be nominated to lead BLM to move forward to the Senate floor is unconscionable.
Tracy Stone-Manning worked alongside other extreme eco-terrorists who were hammering steel spikes into trees on public logging lands. This appalling and dangerous tactic, known as tree spiking, was done intentionally to damage chain saws, disable sawmill blades, and to kill or maim lumberjacks.
Ms. Stone-Manning is unfit to direct the agency whose very mission is to sustain the health of public lands for the enjoyment of present and future generations. She is so extreme even former President Obama’s BLM director opposes her nomination.
I respectfully ask Senator Sinema and Senator Kelly to reject this nomination when it comes up for a final vote,” concluded Rep. Paul Gosar.

Big Crowd and Big Impact as IMSA Returns to Lime Rock Park
After a one-year absence due to the pandemic, IMSA returned to Lime Rock Park in a big way this weekend. With hotels sold out within an hour of the facility, the Connecticut circuit saw a nearly 50% increase in advance ticket sales as the track successfully hosted one of the largest gatherings in the state since the reopening process was initiated earlier this year. Crowds on both Friday and Saturday impressed as the grassy hillsides and multiple VIP hospitality locations were bursting with race fans young and old. “We could fill this place a year out, twice over,” said Kevin Bousquet of the Interlaken Inn about bookings for the IMSA event. “You could tell this year there were so many people that wanted to get out and get back to the track. There was a lot of activity all weekend long and for me, it was really great to have the racers back and staying with us. It is a great group and we have a lot of repeat customers from through the years so it was a strong weekend for us to be sure.” Long a staple event, the impact on local businesses was felt across the area. “It was a really good weekend,” said Lakeville’s Boathouse restaurant head chef Kevin Hohla. “I would say it was above normal, but of course nothing is normal right now! But it was definitely above and beyond, a very good weekend all around for us.” Saturday featured two races from IMSA, which stages sports car races around North America at tracks including Daytona International Speedway, Sebring International Raceway, and Watkins Glen International. Connecticut’s United States Senator Richard Blumenthal returned to the track to take part in the pre-event festivities, making the call to start engines ahead of waving the green flag for the race, and then going out to the hillside to shake hands and thank the fans for coming out to the track. Ahead of the races, some lucky guests had the thrill of a lifetime with a VIP fast lap of the track in one of the multiple Lime Rock Park safety cars, driven enthusiastically by instructors from the Lime Rock Park Driver Club instructors. Other fans got their chance to take to the track in a much more subdued way, with parade laps seeing lines of similar makes take to the track, including American Muscle, Porsche, Corvettes, and a special collections of cars from Miller Motorcars. Lime Rock Park recently announced that a new ownership group has acquired the track from Skip Barber, with Dicky Riegel being named as CEO for the new entity. Riegel has been a passionate supporter of Lime Rock Park since first visiting the track with his father as a young man. Barber will continue maintain an ownership stake and support the management team. The event was a significant success for the new group, and also saw the Lime Rock Park staff rise to the challenge of the unexpected during the event in partnership with IMSA. On Thursday as the IMSA teams were loading into the paddock, the two Lime Rock Park Fan Jumbotrons arrived to the track. Unfortunately, the delivery didn’t go as planned as the vehicle became stuck on the bridge to the outfield. But the IMSA staff and Lime Rock Park emergency services and operations teams jumped in to solve the issue, utilizing forklifts, some valuable insight from some long-time Lime Rock Park campers, and some teamwork to get the vehicle unstuck, make repairs and have everything ready to go again in just a few hour’s time. The track also demonstrated a rapid response to crisis on Saturday, as inclement weather initiated the IMSA emergency protocols to protect race fans, the broadcast team on site, and the event participants following lighting strikes within the proximity cone of safety. While the weather meant that the Northeast Grand Prix ended before its scheduled run time, the outcome was positive with fans being able to find safe locations. “We had a little bit of everything this weekend, and I am thrilled to have had the response we saw from our fans,” said Riegel. “It was gratifying to see so many people here to enjoy the Park, and it was fantastic to be joined by Mr. Blumenthal here once again. The IMSA teams, drivers and organization are all top-flight and it was great to have all the effort that went into planning for this event result in a great event. We learned a lot and are already looking forward to next year with IMSA.” Next on the track public event schedule is the 39th edition of the Historics Festival, which will feature racing, a concours, a car show, a VIP dinner, as well as an exhibition of a special collection of Porsche racing machines.
